Hollis Clayton is in trouble. Still haunted by his small son's death, stalled in his writing career and over fond of the bottle, he finds himself abandoned by his wife for the summer - or, if he doesn't shape up, for good. But without his emotional anchor, Hollis continues to unravel. Besides, he's busy spying on the neighbours and sharing his meals with a stray dog. When is he going to find the time to get his life back on track? Here, in the daily rhythms of Hollis's disintegrating life, lies an evisceratingly comic portrait of suburban despair. With this deeply affecting tale of grief and renewal, Elizabeth H. Winthrop makes a striking debut.

Soda Pop is a story about a pony and the children who owned her. The pony begins life with Mya, a young girl, on a large ranch owned by her grandparents. Mya begins training Tinkerbell, as the pony is known, within days. Her Uncle Rusty helps her with the training from the outset. When Myas grandfather dies suddenly, the family decides to shut down the ranch. Rusty sells off the stock, and by mistake, friends take Tinkerbell to the auction. Tony works for his father as a trainer at a horse trading stable. He works with Windy, as he calls the pony, and soon has her jumping. Tony falls in love with the pony, but his father sells Windy to a colonel from Fort Sam Houston. The colonels son, Clayton Jr., wants nothing to do with the pony. He never even names her. On the first day of him riding her, Clayton Jr. falls off, and Clayton Sr. orders her to be sold for dog meat. Instead of selling her, Hank, a stable hand takes her to his niece near Junction. There, Sarah calls her Jasmine and uses her to herd goats. A major flood takes Jasmine away. Soda Pop ends up in another auction and is bought by Teresa for her son Joshua. This is to be her forever home, and Mya, from the first of the story, is the vet who takes care of her.

A brilliant satire of mass culture and the numbing effects of technology, White Noise tells the story of Jack Gladney, a teacher of Hitler studies at a liberal arts college in Middle America. Jack and his fourth wife, Babette, bound by their love, fear of death, and four ultramodern offspring, navigate the rocky passages of family life to the background babble of brand-name consumerism. Then a lethal black chemical cloud, unleashed by an industrial accident, floats over there lives, an "airborne toxic event" that is a more urgent and visible version of the white noise engulfing the Gladneys—the radio transmissions, sirens, microwaves, and TV murmurings that constitute the music of American magic and dread.

When a local veterinarian decides to take over a traveling carnival’s petting zoo, she doesn’t realize the insanity behind the scenes. Seagn Conway is tired of her veterinary practice — the same entitled pet parents, the same dogs and cats, maybe the occasional lizard or snake, now bore her to pieces. When a traveling carnival with a farm animal petting zoo comes to town, she discovers all the animals are depressed, malnourished, and neglected. Seagn knows she can do a better job of taking care of them than anyone else there, so she purchases the animals, their cages, and their transportation with the purpose of following the carnival around, presenting the animals in their natural habitat. Was it the right decision, she wonders, to give up everything she had for this ragtag collection of failing farm animals?

We Re Friends Right written by William A. Corsaro and has been published by Joseph Henry Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-09-19 with Science categories.

Sociologists often study exotic cultures by immersing themselves in an environment until they become accepted as insiders. In this fascinating account by acclaimed researcher William A. Corsaro, a scientist "goes native" to study the secret world of children. Here, for the first time, are the children themselves, heard through an expert who knows that the only way to truly understand them is by becoming a member of their community. That's just what Corsaro did when he traded in his adult perspective for a seat in the sandbox alongside groups of preschoolers. Corsaro's journey of discovery is as fascinating as it is revealing. Living among and gaining the acceptance of children, he gradually comes to understand that a child's world is far more complex than anyone ever suspected. He documents a special culture, unique unto itself, in which children create their own social structures and exert their own influences. At a time when many parents fear that they don't spend enough time with their children, and experts debate the best path to healthy development, seeing childhood through the eyes of a child offers parents and caregivers fresh and compelling insights. Corsaro calls upon all adults to appreciate, embrace, and savor their children's culture. He asks us to take a cue from those we hold so precious and understand that "we're all friends, right?"
