Nel recupero della biblioteca delle sorelle Zanoni, possidenti, trasferitesi a Brembio intorno agli anni Trenta, e stata ritrovata una copia ben conservata del libro, pubblicato dalla Casa Editrice "La Montanina" dell'Opera Italiana Pro Oriente, a Milano nel febbraio 1929. Il libro contiene i temi premiati nel concorso nazionale per la Celebrazione del Pane rivolto alle scuole superiori, indetto nel 1928. Nella prefazione l'Opera Pro Oriente auspicava: "Questo libretto (...) dovrebbe trovar fortuna nelle campagne" perche lavorar la terra non e bucolica letteratura, "lavorar la terra e opera di pudico e oscuro coraggio; e la bellezza che sorge da quell'ostinato battagliare fra le zolle e, dal vero contadino, sentita in cuore quasi cupamente: con un lampo tenero e rude e fugace negli occhi contenti." I temi premiati hanno "trovato il tono giusto del celebrare terra e pane: non ditirambi, non frascherie; ingenua ammirazione, invece, e pronta facilita a capire di quanto sudore si prosperino la terra e la mensa."

Gli italiani nel Novecento hanno dovuto fare i conti con termini quali il razionamento, l'annona, i surrogati, l'autarchia, la fame da trincea, la gavetta e la marmitta. Tutte parole che mascheravano la fame di guerra e, come accadde dopo le sanzioni imposte dalla Società delle Nazioni nel 1935, la restrizione. Il fascismo coniò slogan come "Chi mangia troppo deruba la Patria" e inaugurò gli orti di guerra sostituendo il té con il carcadè, il Caffè con il Caffesol, una sorta di miscela marroncina che nulla manteneva dell'aroma proprio del caffè, e la pasta, dopo una forte propaganda, con il riso, prodotto dalle risaie italiane. Fin dal 1914 furono le massaie chiamate in prima fila a evitare sprechi e inventare la cucina del riuso e del riciclo. Nulla si doveva buttare. Tutto era buono per altri manicaretti. Si moltiplicarono così fino al boom economico degli anni '50 libri di ricette, suggerimenti e ordini per sfamare un popolo chiamato a combattere, oltre che il nemico, la fame continua. Sarà l'industrializzazione e il consumismo a riempire la pancia degli italiani che una volta sfamati dimenticheranno l'utile e, tutto sommato, "piacevole" cucina del poco e del senza.

L'obiettivo del libro è di fornire un'agevole sintesi di un periodo della storia d'Italia complesso e scottante, in cui sono coinvolti una varietà di soggetti, e che ha una sterminata bibliografia e una pluralità di interpretazioni. Bisogna soprattutto ricordare che spesso questa tematica viene affrontata da personaggi della politica o dai giornalisti, i quali, anche se bravi nella comunicazione, hanno una conoscenza superficiale degli argomenti e non hanno gli strumenti per una ricerca euristica della storia. Fare Storia non significa immaginare, inventare, perché lo studioso di storia affronta con un metodo euristico le fonti, presta attenzione per ogni sfumatura rivelatrice ed ha un forte rispetto scientifico per ciò che si è ritrovato; in breve, interpreta i documenti senza strumentalizzazione per fini pubblici o politici. Il lavoro affronta, per linee generali, tutte le strategie attuate dal "laboratorio politico" del fascismo per arrivare al potere e per poi creare uno stato totalitario, nel quale consolidare una "civiltà fascista", che era parte integrante del progetto totalitario e dell'opera di fascistizzazione, messa in atto dal partito. Il fascismo esaltò l'imperialismo e il mito della "nazione proletaria" per creare il consenso e accentuare i caratteri populistici del regime, smentiti dalle concrete scelte di politica economica.
