Poggendorffs Biographisch-literarisches Handwörterbuch der exakten Naturwissenschaften erscheint seit 1863 und darf als umfassendes Nachschlagewerk in keiner Bibliothek fehlen. Der schöne, in Leder gebundene Ergänzungsband, bestehend aus drei Teilbänden, enthält biographische Angaben zu ca. 800 Mathematikern mit den zugehörigen Bibliographien. Erfasst sind Mathematiker, die zwischen 1820 und 1920 geboren wurden und bisher nicht im Poggendorff enthalten sind. Die Zusammenstellung basiert auf von dem früheren Herausgeber Prof. Hans Salié nachgelassenen umfangreichen Quellenmaterial, Namenslisten und Schriftenverzeichnissen. Parallel zur Arbeit der Poggendorff-Redaktion wurde es von Dr. Heidi Kühn bearbeitet und vervollständigt. Neben den beiden Teilbänden mit Biobibliographien umfasst der Ergänzungsband auch eine Bibliographie der Periodika, die - analog der für den Poggendorff-Band VIIb - die Auflösung der in den Bibliographien zitierten Periodika enthält. Der umfangreiche Ergänzungsband soll eine Lücke zwischen dem Poggendorff-Handwörterbuch und den in elektronischen Medien verfügbaren Mathematiker-Bibliograhien schließen. Teilband III bietet nicht nur einen repräsentativen Querschnitt durch das mathematische Schrifttum der vergangenen eineinhalb Jahrhunderte, sondern gibt darüber hinaus Unterstützung für bibliographische Arbeiten, wenn es um die Suche schwer nachweisbarer, weniger bekannter Periodika geht.
