Bacterial Infections Of Humans written by Alfred S. Evans and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-04-18 with Medical categories.

This is a companion volume to Viral Infections of Humans: Epidemiology and Control. The apparent success of that book in bridging the gap between texts on basic microbiology and those on clinical infectious diseases led to editing this one on bacterial infections, the chapters of which are organized in exactly the same format of 12 units: introduction, historical background, methodology, biological characteristics of the organism, descriptive epidemiology, mechanisms and routes of transmission, pathogenesis and im munity, patterns of host response, control and prevention, unresolved problems, references, and suggested reading. The purpose of this book is to provide a description and understanding of the pathogenesis of infection and disease both within the community and within the individual. This is done in the belief that a variety of factors in both the external and the internal environment, and in the nature of the infectious agent, influence exposure, the development of infection, and the pattern of the host response. An understanding of the epidemiology and pathogenesis of these processes forms the basis for approaches to control and prevention. The first two chapters of this book deal with general epidemiological concepts and with surveillance.

Ultrastructural Pathology of the Cell and Matrix: Third Edition Volume 2 presents a comprehensive examination of the intracellular lesion. It discusses the analysis of pathological tissues using electron microscope. It addresses the experimental procedures made on the cellular level. Some of the topics covered in the book are the structure, distribution, and variations of rod-shaped microtubulated bodies; morphology of intracytoplasmic filaments; melanosome-producing and melanosome-containing cells in tumours; myofilaments in striated muscle; and pathological variations in size, shape, and numbers of microbodies. The intracytoplasmic and intranuclear annulate lamellae are fully covered. An in-depth account of the classification, history, and nomenclature of lysosomes are provided. The morphology and normal variations of melanosomes and anchoring fibrils are completely presented. A chapter is devoted to the endocytotic structures and cell processes. Another section focuses on the classification and nomenclature of fibrous components. The book can provide useful information to cytologists, pathologists, students, and researchers.

Blood Clotting Enzymology covers the mechanisms of blood clotting and their role in thrombosis, hemostasis, and many associated ramifications. This book is composed of 12 chapters that consider the integration of knowledge on blood clotting enzymology with hemostasis physiology. The opening chapter deals with the enzymology of the sol-gel transformation was studied in terms of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, surface physics, immunology, biophysical mechanisms, structural architecture, vitamin K and its antagonists, and the rheology of the blood. The subsequent chapters review the biophysical properties and composition of active substance in blood coagulation, as well as the concepts of prothrombin activation. These topics are followed by discussions on the chemical and physicochemical properties of fibrinogen and fibrin; the application of immulogical methods to delineate important properties of plasma constituents; and the mechanisms of antithrombin activity. Other chapters tackle the importance of hirudin and cobra venom for certain experimental laboratory work in the study of the physiology of blood coagulation. The final chapters survey the role of platelets in hemostasis, bleeding disorders, and the chemistry and function of vitamin K in blood coagulation. This book will prove useful to hematologists, enzyme scientist, immunologists, and research workers who are interested in blood coagulation mechanisms.

A Choice Of Futures written by F. Emery and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Social Science categories.

Exploration of the nature of human communication and the media is a pre requisite to any assessment of the likely future role of communications . . We cannot assume that the nature of these things is transparently obvious to everyone and therefore commonly understood. Three developments in recent decades should adequately warn against such an assumption. First, we had the fiasco of social scientists trying to apply Shannon's mathematical theory of information as if it were a theory of human communication. 'In Shannon's use of information we cannot speak of how much information a person has only how much a message has. ' (Ackoff and Emery, 1972, p. 145). They would not have wandered into that blind alley if they had stopped to think about the nature of human communication. Second was the belated but wholehearted acceptance of the Heider theory of balance and its subse quent wane. Its wane had nothing to do with its inherent merits. It waned because it could not survive on the Procrustean bed of the psychologists' theory of choice. It did not occur to the psychologists to question their as sumptions about how people made the choices that lead to purposeful com munication (Ackoff and Emery, 1972, p. 58). The last example has been the bitter and unended furore about McLuhan. This time the psychologists and sociologists haye been strangely quiet but we can be sure this does not imply acquiescence in McLuhan's views.
