Simon Dubnow's "Jewish History for Children" comprises the entire history of the Jewish people from its beginnings and up to the 1930s and is now available for the first time in German.Simon Dubnow was one of the most important historians of Jewish history. That he also wrote a volume specially for children, to impart to them a national and secular Jewish identity, is less well known. In his volume "Jewish History for Children" from 1931 he addressed not only children, but interested adults as well. This volume provides insight into the historical writing that took occurred before the Holocaust as well as revealing Dubnow's understanding of history as laid out in his famous "World History of the Jewish People".

The Yearbook of the Simon Dubnow institute for 2011 has as one of its major themes the Jewish presence in the local governments of Central Eastern Europe, particularly during the time between World War I and World War II and especially in Poland. A further theme considers matters of literary history after 1945 based on iconic texts as well as approaches determined by our knowledge of history. The general section and the other sections contain contributions on urban life in Eastern Europe, on the history of Jewish newspaper production, on the early studies of the Holocaust, on intellectual circles in the study of Judaism, and on the history of the transfer and effect of continental theories in America.

Lessing Und Das Judentum written by Dirk Niefanger and has been published by Georg Olms Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-10-01 with Foreign Language Study categories.

The 19th-century German-Jewish debate about the author of Nathan and his friend Moses Mendelssohn, followed very different conceptions and parameters of reception. This repeatedly involved forms of respect and contempt, of appropriation and rejection, which have as yet been insufficiently studied. This volume seeks to trace these intricate pathways and not only to understand Lessing in terms of their contexts but also conversely to understand these contexts of Lessing. Many discourses involving Jews and Judaism were oriented to his singular position and presented the opportunity for the creation of an individual image and also for self-assurance. Such a double perspectivation leads to a further pluralisation of our image of Lessing and to a strong differentiation of mentalities, ways of thinking, clichés and dispositifs in a wider and – despite great efforts in research – still by no means sufficiently surveyed field of German-Jewish (literary) history. This volume of essays is the first in a new series which will bring together research and reports from the work of the Lessing Museum in Kamenz.

Theresia Dingelmaier aims to shed light on the phenomenon of Jewish fairy tales in the German language from a literary, genre-theoretical and cultural-historical perspective and to reveal its transcultural and identity-creating narrative potential. In an elaborate compilation of the text holdings from the 19th and 20th centuries, she succeeds in a comprehensive reconstruction of the text corpus. Many of the authors, including Ilse Herlinger, Ludwig Strauß and Irma Singer, are today almost forgotten; their fairy tales can only be found in a few archives and libraries. This book presents not only the individual german- or austrian-jewish folk tales and children's tales, but also their sources and traditions, implications and hopes, their adaptations and interactions, and opens up completely new insights into the genre of fairy tales.

This representative analysis of classical and innovative Bible adaptations in their varying individual, social, religious and educational contexts, and a bibliography of about 1000 titles provide a differentiated portrayal of the development of bibles for children and their use in school from the late Middle Ages to the 21st Century. The volume focuses on Bible adaptations of Protestant, Catholic and Jewish origin. The study distinguishes between books with Bible verses, Bible paraphrases, Bible stories and picture Bibles and traces their development. The new concern for children in the Age of Enlightenment, the intense interest in biblical pietism, the introduction of compulsory schooling and bible instruction as well as new concepts for religious education gave rise to characteristic further and new developments of Bible adaptations. In the light of an increasingly complex market for children's bibles, this historical retrospective inspires us to compile and put to the test childrens' bibles that meet contemporary exegetical and didactic requirements.
