That there is a "Hegelian legacy" in Marx's writings is not in dispute. There is great controversy, however, over the extent to which this legacy should be affirmed or rejected. In fact, the Hegelian orientation toward Marx and toward social theory in general has been largely rejected for at least a decade. In Dialectical Social Theory and Its Critics, Tony Smith challenges this position and thereby reopens a debate of critical importance to Marx-Hegel studies that has significant implications for the nature of social theory in general. In Part I, Smith explores a number of aspects of the Hegelian legacy by means of a systematic dialectical reading, limiting himself to themes that have either been overlooked or dealt with unsatisfactorily in recent scholarship. In Part II, he examines a number of recent arguments against the Hegelian legacy in Marxism formulated from the neo-Kantian, analytical-Marxist, and postmodernist perspectives advanced by Lucio Colletti, Jon Elster and John Roemer, and Jean Baudrillard, respectively. Dialectical Social Theory and Its Critics is more than an exercise in the history of ideas. Its main aim and most significant accomplishment is to establish that dialectical social theory retains practical importance today and is, in fact, crucial to interdisciplinary attempts to construct a viable theory of the social world.

This book is the result of a symposium sponsored by the International Academy of Marital Spirituality (INTAMS), which brought together a group of distinguished scholars and theologians to discuss the current social and spiritual emergency of Christian marriage. Going beyond a strictly theoretical evaluation of the sacrament of marriage, the contributors examine the subject from a pastoral viewpoint and address the praxis situation of couples trying to live out the implications of the sacrament. The volume will be of interest to theologians as well as to catechists involved in the preparation of couples for the sacrament. Klaus Demmer begins the book with an overview of INTAMS. He provides background information on the symposium, outlines the main themes discussed, and introduces the essays included in the volume. The first essay, by Jörg Splett, presents a philosophical reflection on the nature of Christian marriage and the way in which it fulfills the person. From a historical perspective, Michel Rouche then provides a survey of the many changes in the concept of marriage and the family throughout European history. Ladislas Örsy contributes a fascinating essay in which he describes the sacrament of marriage as a special vocation. He examines the divine and human action in the nuptial ceremony and focuses on God as the principal actor in the event. Örsy meditates on God's revealed thoughts on marriage; on God's presence during the ceremony and throughout a couple's married life; and on the implications of the Christian doctrine of marriage for spirituality, liturgy, and canon law. The final essay, by Carlo Rocchetta, traces Vatican II's terminological shift from marriage as a "contract" to marriage as a "covenant" and outlines the main guidelines for a new theological conceptualization of marriage as a sacrament. The First Conference of the International Society for the Study of Time was held at the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut at Oberwolfach in the Black Forest, Federal Republic of Germany from Sunday, 31 August to Saturday, 6 September, 1969. The origin of this conference and the formation of the Society goes back to a proposal due to J. T. Fraser that was discussed at a conference on "Interdisciplinary Perspectives of Time" held by the New York Academy of Sciences in January, 1966. It was unanimously agreed than that an international society should be formed on an interdisciplinary basis with the object of stimulating interest in all problems concerning 'time and that this object could best be attained by means of conferences held at regular intervals. J. T. Fraser was elected Secretary, S. Watanabe Treasurer, and I was elected President. It was agreed, at my suggestion, that the organization of the first conference of the newly formed Society be left to a committee of these three officers, on the understanding that they would invite authorities on the role of time in the various special sciences and humanities to form an Advisory Board to assist them. One of the main difficulties in seeking support for an interdisciplinary conference is that most foundations confine their interest exclusively either to the sciences or to the humanities.
