Sungguh merupakan fakta sejarah yang membanggakan bahwa sejak 7 November 2003, UNESCO mengakui wayang Indonesia sebagai World Master Piece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Dengan kata lain, wayang Indonesia telah diakui sebagai mahakarya dunia, dan telah menembus level tertinggi kebudayaan umat manusia. Namun, kehebatan dan kedahsyatan kisah serta pertunjukan wayang yang berurat akar di Indonesia sukar dicari tandingannya karena yang diceritakan adalah perikehidupan manusia di jagat raya ini. Belum lagi, pertunjukan dan kisah wayang di Jawa telah mengalami banyak perubahan, disesuaikan dengan situasi-kondisi lokal masing-masing daerah. Bahkan, wayang yang semula berakar pada kepercayaan serta adat budaya Hindu (India), digunakan pula sebagai media dakwah Islam oleh para wali di tanah Jawa. Buku kecil ini sengaja ditulis dengan praktis untuk memberikan gambaran awal cerita dan latar belakang tokoh-tokoh yang berperan dalam kisah wayang purwa. Dengan membaca buku ini, paling tidak akan terbangun gambaran konstruktif mengenai wayang. Dan, ketika menikmati pertunjukannya maka diharapkan akan mempunyai bekal yang cukup untuk mengapresiasi jagat seni pewayangan dengan lebih mantap, jernih, dan terbuka. Termasuk dalam mengambil saripati maupun pesan moral yang terkandung di dalamnya.

Essentially the following commentary on the contents of the Nägara-Kertägama has been made up from notes by former editors of the text together with remarks, criticisms and digressions by the present author. As Kern, Krom and their contemporaries were especially interested in dynastie history and archeology their notes on those subjects are legion, and as a result of their studies on many points a communis opinio has been reached. The argumentations which led up to this end are not reproduced in the present edition. The interested reader is referred to Krom's great books: Oud-Javaansche Kunst and Hindoe-Javaansche Geschiedenis. It is to be expected that before long the results of Krom's life-work will be made accessible for English readers by De Casparis. On the other hand cultural history, religion, economics and sociology have been rather neglected by the first editors of the Nägara-Kertä gama. The present author has done his best to remedy that omission. The reader will find that the greater part of the following commen taries is concerned with those subjects. The contemporaneous minor texts and the charters that are published, translated and annotated in the present book in the same manner as the Nägara-Kertägama have been chosen almost exc1usively for the valuable information on social, economic and religious conditions in the 14th century Majapahit realm that is afforded by them.

"Earth Dance," the story of four generations of Balinese women, centers on conflicts that arise between the demands of caste and personal desires. Narrated by Ida Ayu Telaga, a Balinese woman in her thirties, the novel shows Balinese women-as depicted by her mother, grandmother and female peers-to be motivated by two factors: the yearning to be beautiful, and the desire for a high-caste husband. Headstrong Telaga defies her mother's wishes and marries the man of her dreams, who is a commoner. Thus, in a reversal of societal expectations, as shown in the novel by images of women who aspire to "liberation" through "marrying up," Telaga's emancipation is implicitly characterized as a move downwards, through transformation to the status of a commoner. "Earth Dance" also reveals that-like high-caste status-beauty, too, has a price. Behind the thick, glossy hair and golden complexion, lies a web of jealousy, derision and intrigue. Telaga, whose life is controlled by her mother's avarice, her mother-in-law's bitterness and the greed of her sister-in-law, has frequent cause to wonder: "Is this what it means to be a woman?"
