Peter Petersen, einem kleinen Angestellten einer Hamburger Importfirma, liegt die Lust zum Abenteuer im Blut. Er schließt sich einer Expedition an, die ihn auf Tigerjagd in den indischen Dschungel führt. Dort fängt er den Tiger Akbar, ein besonders schönes und kluges Tier, der eine wichtige Rolle in seinem Leben spielen wird. In den undurchdringlichen Urwäldern Indiens kommt Peter Petersen seiner Begleiterin, der geheimnisvollen, faszinierenden Artistin Daphne Dennys näher, in die er sich leidenschaftlich verliebt. Dieser farbige, fesselnde Roman führt an internationale Schauplätze. Die Geschichte des Tigers, den die Menschen »Akbar« nannten, hebt an mit dem Duft üppig blühender Syringen. Mit diesem hellen und süßen Duft, der aus dem stillen, in sich verkapselten Knaben Peter Petersen einen Mann machte, der jählings und scheinbar unmotiviert dem Zwinger seiner bürgerlich eingeengten Existenz entsprang, um sich – stark, giervoll und sehnsuchtbesessen – in ein buntes und verwirrend gefährliches Leben der Abenteuer zu stürzen. Ein Abend im Frühling. Das Rot der versunkenen Sonne färbt den westlichen Himmel, spiegelt sich schwach auf den sanften Wellenkämmen des Sees. Peter Petersen sitzt am Rande einer zart geschwungenen Bucht des Alsterufers. Sitzt auf einer leuchtend braun gestrichenen Holzbank und liest in einem groß gezeichneten und vielfach gestempelten Buch der städtischen Leihbücherei. Weiße Segel ziehen langsam und stetig über das glänzende Wasser, dessen bewegtes Dunkel allmählich siegt über den verflackernden Purpur der letzten Sonnenglut. Farbenfrohe Boote tragen in weichen Kissen hell gewandete Mädchen, die lässig und lachend mit den rudernden Liebsten flirten. Auf dem Steg des Brutkastens, den man in der Bucht errichtet hat, kraxeln drollige graue Schwanenküken, aufgeregt umkreist von den schimmernd weißen Eltern. Durch die warme Abendluft wehen leise die Melodien des Bläserorchesters im Uhlenhorster Fährhaus. Rings sind die Bänke besetzt: einige ältere Ehepaare, die korpulent und behaglich den Abendfrieden genießen, ein paar junge Menschen, abwesend und unlustig in Büchern und Magazinen blätternd, zwei Liebespärchen, die mit sichtlicher Ungeduld auf das Dunkel warten, um sich endlich küssen zu können. Hinter den Büschen der Anlagen hupt auf dem Fahrdamm der Prachtstraße mitunter ein schnell dahinflitzendes Auto, mahnt an die Unrast der nahen Stadt. Peter Petersen fügt sich gut in dieses Bild spießerlicher Abendruhe. Einundzwanzig Jahre ist er alt und so recht das, was man einen braven Burschen nennt. Ist niemals sitzen geblieben in der Schule, hat die kaufmännische Lehre mit Auszeichnung bestanden, ist nun schon drei Jahre Gehilfe in der Firma Wilkens & Companie, Häute-Import. Die Mutter ist seit vielen Jahren tot, nun lebt er neben dem Vater her, und die Schwester führt ihnen den Haushalt. Er verträgt sich gut mit beiden, ist pünktlich, stets gefällig und immer freundlich. Liest viel in seinen freien Stunden, geht wöchentlich zweimal ins Kino und einmal im Monat in ein Theater. Mehr als dies begehrten seine Sinne bis heute nicht vom Leben. Heute hat er sich durch den ganzen Tag seltsam bedrückt und verworren gefühlt. Nicht wie sonst ist ihm die Arbeit glatt und leicht von der Hand geflossen, er hat sich dazu zwingen müssen, und sie ist ihm zur Qual geworden. Der Vater hat ihn freilich verlacht, als er zu ihm von seinen Nöten gesprochen, hat lustig mit den Augen gezwinkert und gemeint, ihm stecke wohl der Frühling im Blut ... Aber abends ist es noch schlimmer geworden mit ihm. So müde fühlte er sich, so schwach und merkwürdig weich in allen Gliedern.
