Der siebente Band des Standardwerks der Terrorismusforschung befasst sich insbesondere mit dem veränderten Erscheinungsbild des Phänomens „Terrorismus“ seit der Bildung des sog. „Islamischen Staates“ und seines Bruchs mit al-Qaida. Dazu werden die unterschiedlichen Akteure des Konflikts in Syrien und dem Irak untersucht und profunde Analysen von ausgewiesenen Experten zum wieder entfachten Konflikt mit der PKK in der Türkei, zum islamistisch motivierten Terrorismus im Jemen, in Libyen wie auch in Ostafrika und dem Tschadseebecken vorgelegt. Des Weiteren werden der zunehmende Rechtsradikalismus in Europa und das „Lone-Wolf“-Phänomen in diesem Spektrum sowie ein potenzieller Einsatz von biologischen Massenvernichtungswaffen durch Terroristen thematisiert. Der Band behandelt zudem die erweiterte Möglichkeit des Einsatzes der Bundeswehr im Rahmen der Terrorismusabwehr im Inland wie auch den Begriff des „hybriden Terrorismus“. Darüber hinaus wird der Frage des „Sieges“ im Vernetzen Ansatz nachgegangen sowie das Konzept des Salafismus untersucht.
