Das Institut für Arbeitsschutz der Deutschen Gesetzlichen Unfallversicherung (IFA) unterstützt die Berufsgenossenschaften und Unfallkassen bei Fragestellungen zur Sicherheit und Gesundheit am Arbeitsplatz, insbesondere im naturwissenschaftlich-technischen Bereich. Der Jahresbericht 2011 stellt Aktivitäten und neue Arbeitsergebnisse des Instituts vor. Schwerpunkte liegen auf Beratung, Forschung sowie Prüfung und Zertifizierung. Die Dokumentation von Arbeitsbedingungen, insbesondere bei chemischen, biologischen und physikalischen Einwirkungen macht dabei einen großen Teil aus. Basierend auf Analysen der Arbeitsbedingungen lassen sich Hilfestellungen für die betriebliche Praxis entwickeln und über den direkten Kontakt zu Unfallversicherungsträgern verbreiten. Auch Veröffentlichungen, Datenbanken, Veranstaltungen und die Mitwirkung in Gremien dienen dazu, die Arbeitsergebnisse zu vermitteln. Der Umgang mit Nanomaterialien als bedeutender technologischer Wachstumsmarkt muss so gestaltet werden, dass sich für Sicherheit und Gesundheit von Beschäftigten keine zusätzlichen Gefährdungen ergeben. Das gilt ebenso für bereits lange bekannte Expositionen, wie die durch krebserzeugende Stoffe am Arbeitsplatz. Aber auch lang bekannte Gefahrstoffe wie Asbest oder polychlorierte Biphenyle werfen immer wieder neue Fragen auf. Im Eisenbahnbetrieb treten zahlreiche altbekannte Gefahrenquellen auf. Hier darf Persönliche Schutzausrüstung gegen Lärm nicht mögliche Unfallgefahren erhöhen. Der Einsatz des CUELA-Systems ermöglicht eine messtechnische Erfassung von Muskel-Skelett-Aktivitäten und findet Anwendung in immer mehr Tätigkeitsfeldern, beispielsweise zur Ermittlung von Kniebelastungen bei der Arbeit. Mensch-Maschine-Interaktionen sind an industriellen Arbeitsplätzen von zunehmender Bedeutung, die Simulation einer Arbeitsumgebung in virtueller Realität erleichtert frühzeitige Prävention in diesem Bereich. Austausch und Zusammenarbeit mit Partnerinstitutionen im europäischen und internationalen Rahmen liefern wichtige Impulse für die Arbeit des IFA. Neben der Beteiligung an Projekten im institutionellen Rahmen der Europäischen Union hat auch die internationale Kooperation PEROSH verschiedene Projekte initiiert, an denen das Institut mitwirkt. Auch die Kontakte zu Arbeitsschutzinstituten im Ausland, wie INRS oder NIOSH, ermöglichen es, Ergebnisse, Wissen und Ideen zwischen den Partnern auszutauschen.
