Excerpt from Jahresbericht Über Soziale Hygiene, Demographie und Medizinalstatistik, Sowie Alle Zweige des Sozialen Versicherungswesens, Vol. 7: Bericht Über das Jahr 1907 Vor sieben Jahren schrieben wir im Vorwort des ersten Bandes dieses Jahresberichtw, daß die Gmdheitspflege und Krankheits verhütung sich immer wieder an den Ergebnissen der Demographie und Bevölkerungsstatistik orientieren müsse und wir den Titel der geplanten Jahresberichte über Soziale Hygiene und Demographie in bewußtem Anklang an die Bezeichnung der Internationalen Kongresse für "hygiene und Demographie gewählt hätten. Wir verfuhren so, obgleich wir, auch ohne daß wir von einigen Kritikern des ersten Bandes darauf aufmerksam gemacht zu werden brauchten, wohl wußten, daß die Verbindung dieser beiden Disziplinen in der Bezeichnung der großen internationalen Kongresse nur eine sehr lose und durch histo rische Znßlligkdten begründete war. Aber wir waren der Über zeugung, daß nur durch eine enge Wissenschaftliche Verbindung mit der Demographie die Hygiene sich zu einer Sozialen Hygiene ergänzen läßt. Es ist uns nun eine besondere Genugtuung' an dieser Stelle, die den Jahresbericht über das J ahr 1907 einleitet, feststellen zu können, daß unsere auf rein theoretische Erwägungen gestützte Anschauung sich schneller durchgesetzt hat, als: wir annehmen konnten. Hat doch der im Berichtsjahr in Berlin tagende XIV. Internationale Kongreß für Hygiene und Demographie zum ersten Male die bisher übliche Scheidung der Veranstaltung in zwei selbständige Teile auf gegeben und die Demographie dem allgemeinen hygienischen Rahmen eingegliedert, und hat doch kein Geringerer als der Präsident des Kaiserlichen Gesundheitsamtes Eu m m diese Neuerung in der Eröffnungs sitzung ausdrücklich mit der "znsammengehörigkeit der Forschungen und praktischen Tätigkeit auf beiden wichtigen Gebieten motiviert und ausgesprochen, daß "hygiene und Demographie Hand in Hand gehen müßten, wenn an den Erfolgen solle geprüft werden können.
