Globalizing The Prehistory Of Japan written by Ann Kumar and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-11-24 with Political Science categories.

This iconoclastic work on the prehistory of Japan and of South East Asia challenges entrenched views on the origins of Japanese society and identity. The social changes that took place in Japan in the time-period when the Jomon culture was replaced by the Yayoi culture were of exceptional magnitude, going far beyond those of the so-called Neolithic Revolution in other parts of the world. They included not only a new way of life based on wet-rice agriculture but also the introduction of metalworking in both bronze and iron, and furthermore a new architecture functionally and ritually linked to rice cultivation, a new religion, and a hierarchical society characterized by a belief in the divinity of the ruler. Because of its immense and enduring impact the Yayoi period has generally been seen as the very foundation of Japanese civilization and identity. In contrast to the common assumption that all the Yayoi innovations came from China and Korea, this work combines exciting new scientific evidence from such different fields as rice genetics, DNA and historical linguistics to show that the major elements of Yayoi civilization actually came, not from the north, but from the south.

Epic Adventures written by Jan Jansen and has been published by LIT Verlag Münster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Fiction categories.

The many adventures of the "epic" in modern times are fascinating topics in themselves. The Romantics claimed that every self-respecting nation should, at some time, have had one and they set out to reconstruct these epics for political as well as cultural reasons. Such epics represented earlier stages in the development of nation-states and in this modern world they were, for a long time, hard to appreciate. The introduction of tape recorders, however, brought the epic back in the limelight. It became fashionable for scholars to record long oral narratives, and to present them as long written poems that reflected deeply ingrained ideas. Because of this technology, the idea of the epic was revitalized. This volume presents critical analyses of epics in Sub-Saharan Africa, the former Soviet Union, South-East Asia, Medieval Europe, and America and discusses the process of revitalization, sometimes even invention, of epics in particular historical, political, and academic contexts. Jan Jansen is a member of the Department of Anthropology of the University of Leiden, Netherlands. Henk M.J. Maier is professor in the Department of Languages and Cultures of Southeast Asia and Oceania of the University of Leiden, Netherlands.

Words’ Wonder: Beginners’ Guide to Literature is an attempt to introduce students to the wonder of words in literature. The beauty and extraordinariness of words used in literature may help increase students’ aesthetic and intellectual growth. Studying literature is not merely cognitive oriented but also transformative. By gaining knowledge about literature from a variety of culture across the world, students can grow their sense of becoming human beings so as to develop their global citizenship, tolerance and ethical responsibility. In Indonesian context, as in any parts of the world sometimes wrecked by prejudice and intolerance, good values from different literary traditions should be implanted in the young age as early as possible. Only then can people foster positive attitudes, put aside resentment and bigotry, remove anger and bitterness. The purpose of this guidebook is thus to make students aware of the joy, charm and fascination of reading literary works, while cultivating their artistic, affective and social aspects of life through the power of words.

Musical Journeys In Sumatra written by Margaret Kartomi and has been published by University of Illinois Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-06-30 with Music categories.

Although Sumatra is the sixth largest island in the world and home to an estimated 44 million Indonesians, its musical arts and cultures have not been the subject of a book-length study until now. Documenting and explaining the ethnographic, cultural, and historical contexts of Sumatra's performing arts, Musical Journeys in Sumatra also traces the changes in their style, content, and reception from the early 1970s onward. Having dedicated almost forty years of scholarship to exploring the rich and varied music of Sumatran provinces, Margaret Kartomi provides a fascinating ethnographic record of vanishing musical genres, traditions, and practices that have become deeply compromised by the pressures of urbanization, rural poverty, and government policy. This deeply informed collection showcases the complex diversity of Indonesian music and includes field observations from six different provinces: Aceh, North Sumatra, Riau, West Sumatra, South Sumatra, and Bangka-Belitung. Featuring photographs and original drawings from Kartomi's field observations of instruments and performances, Musical Journeys in Sumatra provides a comprehensive musical introduction to this neglected, very large island, with its hundreds of ethno-linguistic-musical groups.
