Buku ini diawali dengan pembahasan mengenai pemikiran dasar mekanika statistik yang menjelaskan posisi mekanika statistik terhadap cabang-cabang ilmu fisika lainnya, serta memperkenalkan konsep-konsep dasarnya, seperti keadaan mikro dan keadaan makro sistem, mekanisme pererataan dan probabilitas, dan konsep ensambel. Mekanika statistik tidak dapat dipahami terpisah dari termodinamika. Oleh karena itu, buku ini dilengkapi pula dengan ulasan singkat satu bab mengenai konsep-konsep termodinamika, terutama de?nisi-de?nisi dasar yang digunakan dalam termodinamika. Pembahasan mekanika statistik dalam buku ini diawali dengan pengenalan konsep ruang fase sebagai jembatan antara mekanika klasik dan mekanika statistik. Dari konsep ruang fase, konsep ensambel kemudian diperkenalkan dengan mengenalkan tiga ensambel dalam mekanika statistik, yaitu ensambel mikrokanonik, ensambel kanonik, dan ensambel makrokanonik. Sebagai tambahan juga diperkenalkan ensambel isobarik. Selanjutnya pemanfaatan konsep ensambel dijelaskan secara lengkap dengan berbagai contohnya termasuk di dalamnya pembahasan mengenai statistika partikel yang saling berinteraksi. Jembatan menuju statistika kuantum diawali dengan pengenalan keadaan kuantum sebagai pengganti konsep ruang fase klasik. Selanjutnya konsep keadaan murni dan keadaan tercampur dijelaskan dengan gamblang, diakhiri dengan konsep operator kerapatan statistika kuantum. Sifat simetri vektor keadaan banyak partikel selanjutnya diperkenalkan secara mendalam sebagai awalan memperkenalkan statistika Bose-Einsten dan Fermi-Dirac. Pembahasan mengenai gas ideal kuantum disertai dengan berbagai aplikasinya menjadi pembahasan terakhir dalam buku ini.
