Captain Cook is generally acknowledged as the first great European scientific explorer. His voyage of exploration to the Pacific in HM bark Endeavour, commencing in 1768, lasted almost three years, recorded thousands of miles of uncharted lands and seas – including New Zealand, the east coast of Australia and many Pacific islands – and tested all Cook's skills as a navigator, seaman and leader. His voyages were among the first to take civilian scientists, notably Sir Joseph Banks, and they revealed to European eyes the mysterious and exotic lands, peoples, flora and fauna of the Pacific, never before seen. But while Cook understandably dominates the story of 18th-century Pacific exploration, the achievements of those who followed him on many voyages of science and exploration into the Pacific have been neglected and deprived of the greater attention they deserve. Correcting this imbalance, Pacific Exploration explores the European voyages that continued Cook's work not only of charting but also starting to exploit and control the Pacific. These voyages, by William Bligh, George Vancouver, Matthew Flinders, Malaspina, Lapérouse and Arthur Phillip, span a period that saw Britain becoming the world's leading maritime power, a situation well in place by the time that Charles Darwin's voyage in Fitzroy's Beagle laid the basis of even greater understanding of the development of life on earth. Recounting and illustrating these achievements and legacies using fascinating text and beautiful illustrations and artworks from the period, this book explores topics of scientific discovery, engagement with indigenous peoples, the use of shipboard artists and scientists, the growing professionalism of the hydrographic service, the vessels used and the colonial, commercial and imperial contexts of the voyages.

"Captain James Cook is probably the most famous maritime explorer of all time, and with good reason. The three voyages of discovery he made between 1768 and his death in 1779 set new standards in navigation, surveying and shipboard health. Among his many achievements he dispelled the myth of a Great Southern Continent, established that New Zealand was two islands and discovered and charted the eastern coast of Australia to a high degree of accuracy. The retinues of gentleman scientists that sailed with him made advances in astronomy, botany and zoology, and artists such as Sydney Parkinson, Alexander Buchan, and William Hodges provided Europeans with some of the first images of the exotic peoples, flora and fauna of the Pacific." "Much has been written about Cook, but in this format the author, Anthony Cornish, is able to structure the book as a Question & Answer session, to discuss the 101 most pertinent and interesting questions relating to Cook's career and character, the objectives and route of each of his voyages, and the key events. Beautifully enhanced with engravings from the published narratives of the voyages, artefacts and paintings now held in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, and photographs of the Endeavor replica, this is an essential companion for any Cook enthusiast."--BOOK JACKET.

This book is a gripping account of the career and achievements of one of the most intriguing figures of world exploration and British naval history -- Captain James Cook. Born in 1728, the son of a farm laborer, Cook, through sheer determination, keen intellect and consummate skills as a seaman, rose to honours and recognition in his own time and to a unique and enduring prominence in the history of navigation. The book retraces Cook's three voyages, ending with his tragic death in Hawaii in 1779. It also assesses his unique contribution to exploration and discovery, to seafaring, science and medicine. It took extraordinary courage to sail for months on end through unchartered waters, aboard crowded ships, relying almost entirely on the skills and knowledge of the sea possessed by the captain, his officers and crew. One can almost feel the spray and taste the salt as this fast-moving narrative unfolds. Superbly illustrated with Bill Finnis's photographs, maps and evocative sketches from his own six-year voyage, as well as the charts, paintings and engravings of the period, this fascinating book offers a unique understanding of the personality and achievements of Captain James Cook, seaman and scientist.

James Cook is arguably the greatest maritime explorer in modern history. Between 1768 and 1779, Cook led three expeditions to the far reaches of the world to answer the greatest scientific and geographical questions of the age. Cook's ascension from humble origins was even more remarkable. The son of a farm foreman, Cook rose from able seaman to command rank in the Royal Navy, the first man to ever do so. Cook achieved this triumph through unrelenting curiosity and interest in self-improvement, unwavering commitment to excellence, and courageous audacity when pursuing his dreams.Maps of the world today do not contain the same empty spaces that their eighteenth century counterparts did. Yet potential advances in technology and related fields present today's leaders with similarly unrevealed possibilities. Cook's story and accomplishments can therefore inspire present and future generations of leaders; As Far as Possible conveys that story to a modern audience, and presents timeless principles to guide them.
