This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1917 edition. Excerpt: ... VII LONDON TO "PRAATFONTEIN" The visit to London was of a private nature. General Smuts said so. A journalist, however, is a surly, suspicious sort of person at the best of times, and so there were newspapers, both in South 'Africa and in England, that attached a political significance to the journey. It is possible, of course, that a man travels to London on private business, and yet finds both occasion and opportunity to combine that private business with what might be called public pleasure! There was a LiberaLGovernment in power.' Fate, the Jester, had come in Chinese-yellow garment to sweep away the Conservative Administration that had risen from strength to strength on the khaki wave of South African conquest. Questions of franchise, representation, redistribution, and delimitation of constituencies and such-like were on the tapis in the Transvaal. The Pall Mall Gazette of the 25th of January 1906 considered all this, taken in conjunction with the appearance of General Smuts on the Metropolitan horizon, serious enough to remind its readers that "British colonists have learned before now to tremble at the thought of a Liberal Government, and they may well prepare to face the - worst. . . ." One wonders whether General Smuts is still looked upon in those nervous newspaper offices as quite such a sinister figure. The Evening Standard proposed to give the victim an opportunity of stating his case. It attempted to interview him. General Smuts "courteously declined." "I can say nothing to the Press," he said; "I never do." The proverb has it that," never is a long time," but in the whole course of his career General Smuts has certainly granted very few Press interviews--for publication. He did say, to the Evening Standard's young man, ...

Corings and comodules are fundamental algebraic structures, which can be thought of as both dualisations and generalisations of rings and modules. Introduced by Sweedler in 1975, only recently they have been shown to have far reaching applications ranging from the category theory including differential graded categories through classical and Hopf-type module theory to non-commutative geometry and mathematical physics. This is the first extensive treatment of the theory of corings and their comodules. In the first part, the module-theoretic aspects of coalgebras over commutative rings are described. Corings are then defined as coalgebras over non-commutative rings. Topics covered include module-theoretic aspects of corings, such as the relation of comodules to special subcategories of the category of modules (sigma-type categories), connections between corings and extensions of rings, properties of new examples of corings associated to entwining structures, generalisations of bialgebras such as bialgebroids and weak bialgebras, and the appearance of corings in non-commutative geometry.

For over two centuries, liberal apologists for empire in Britain and America have been plagued by the contradictions between political liberalism and the exclusive, anti-democratic, and violent practices of imperialism - contradictions that become particularly obvious during periods of perceived imperial crisis. This book interrogates the complicated rhetoric of several pro-imperial, public intellectuals from both the late British Empire and contemporary America, two eras marked by intense anxiety about decline.

The Boer War written by Fred R. van Hartesveldt and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-05-30 with History categories.

One hundred years after the Boer War, the British continue to debate what went wrong, while the war has significant nationalist overtones in today's South Africa. This book examines changes in interpretations of the war and provides a bibliography of major sources on the Boer War, now sometimes called the South African War. The bibliography focuses on the military history, but also includes some historical accounts of the political debate. The first part of the book provides an extended historiographical essay, while part two provides an annotated bibliography of the titles discussed in part one. Historiographical questions concerning the Boer War are numerous. Discussions of military operations focus on the early use of modern weaponry and the effect of guerrilla tactics on a traditional force, while other historians debate the question of British military leadership and organization. Questions also revolve around British imperialism and the scramble for Africa. Frequently called the second war for freedom by South African authors, the war was the reason that South Africa, unlike other British colonies, gained independence without majority rule. This makes the war of continuing relevance to the turmoil in South Africa, the collapse of the minority government, and the continuing problems of the current government. This book will provide a useful tool for those wishing to research the war.

World War I and Propaganda offers a new look at a familiar subject. The contributions to this volume demonstrate that the traditional view of propaganda as top-down manipulation is no longer plausible. Drawing from a variety of sources, scholars examine the complex negotiations involved in propaganda within the British Empire, in occupied territories, in neutral nations, and how war should be conducted. Propaganda was tailored to meet local circumstances and integrated into a larger narrative in which the war was not always the most important issue. Issues centering on local politics, national identity, preservation of tradition, or hopes of a brighter future all played a role in different forms of propaganda. Contributors are Christopher Barthel, Donata Blobaum, Robert Blobaum, Mourad Djebabla, Christopher Fischer, Andrew T. Jarboe, Elli Lemonidou, David Monger, Javier Pounce,Catriona Pennell, Anne Samson, Richard Smith, Kenneth Andrew Steuer, María Inés Tato, and Lisa Todd.
