Once a star of postwar industrial production and methods, Japan has encountered serious trouble with market forces in recent years. Social changes and departures from tradition are becoming more common in this conservative country. The revised edition of the popular work, Japan: Its History and Culture, Fourth Edition, documents and explains these changes. Seamlessly blending current events, politics, and cultural elements, the authors provide a riveting account of a nation often misunderstood by the West.

Japan: A Short Cultural History was first published in 1931 by the Cresset Press in London and D. Appleton in New York. Writing in the Journal of American Oriental Society in 1959, Edwin O. Reischauer, Harvard professor and leading scholar in Japanese history and culture (and future United States Ambassador to Japan) said this of George Sansom's comprehensive account of Japanese history: "When Sir George Sansom's Japan: A Short Cultural History appeared in 1931, it raised the study of Japanese history in the West to new levels. Its penetrating analysis of institutions, sensitive interpretations of cultural developments, and stylistic charm contrasted with the plodding pedestrian surveys and over-written anecdotal accounts that had hitherto served in the Occident as introductions to Japanese history." The present Stanford edition, the first to appear in paperback in the United States, is a photographic reproduction of the British edition except in two particulars: eight of the original twenty plates have been dropped, and the maps have been redrawn by Margaret Kays. In redrawing the maps it was decided to retain the author's terminology, orthography, and dating even where these have been discarded or suspended by more recent scholarship.

Japan has been a cultural jewel of the Far East since time immemorial and, as such, draws interest from inquisitive folk from all over the world. One can argue that the sheer remoteness of such a faraway place is what piques interest, as we have a tendency to naturally perceive such distant lands as mystical and exotic. However, far more than the distance, the cultures, the history, and the way of life in Japan are what fascinate us.From the time of the Samurai to the tumultuous period during the World Wars to now, Japan has shown the world that it is possible to be small and succeed. The country's long and eventful history has shaped the Japanese mentality in a special way and given rise to many unique social conventions, codes of conduct, and various attitudes. The people of Japan are generally found by visitors to be courteous and polite with foreigners, particularly Westerners. As globalization grows, more people become fascinated with life in Japan, its past, and the pop culture. Manga, Anime, Sony PlayStation, and so much more has become highly desirable by people around the world. It is little wonder that a book about the history, culture, lifestyle, and living in Japan is necessary to explore all that such a tiny country offers.Whether you are interested in the culture of Japan, the rules and language or more of the way of life one can enjoy on the island; it will all be available. You are going to fall in love with Japan!

This reprint of the original 1876 second edition is an enchanting and impressive history of Japan. Divided into two parts, this work gives a succinct but thorough history of Japan. The first half of the book covers the history of the island nation from 660 BC through 1872 AD, outlining the myths, legends, religions, and customs of the many periods in Japanese history. The second half of the book focuses on the years between 1870 to 1875, the years in which the author lived in Japan. Here, Griffis details the rapid changes and evolution of modern Japan just after the Meiji Restoration and the fresh arrival of Western culture in the land of the rising sun.
