This book will be of vital interest to scholars in comparative psychology, the histories of Russian psychology and American psychology, to pastoral psychologists, and humanistic psychologists. The book sheds light on the differences between American and Russian mentality, and therefore may be of interest to social psychologists and political scientists and analysts. In this book twelve eminent psychologists discuss the changes in Russian psychology since Carl Rogers' seminal visit to the USSR in 1986. In the process they evaluate the effect of American methods of psychotherapy on Russian therapies in view of the differences between American and Russian mentalities. They discuss the roles of Russian academic, cultural, and literary traditions as well as Russian Orthodoxy in shaping those emerging therapies.

Japan S International Youth written by Roger Goodman and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990 with Education categories.

A striking aspect of Japan's growing international activity is the return home each year of thousands of children who have lived abroad as a result of their parents' work. Traditionally, it has been widely believed that these children were stigmatized and that they faced severe problems in adjusting to the realities of living in Japanese society. Drawing on his long-term fieldwork in one of the special schools set up to receive these children, this book is the first to challenge these ideas. Goodman argues that the convergence of several factors--particularly parental status and a powerful new political rhetoric stressing "internationalization"--is making these returnee children the vanguard of a new social elite.

The astonishing success of Japanese corporations throughout the world has transplanted millions of Japanese into foreign lands, but returning families face a crisis--a problematic, sometimes traumatic reunion with an inward-looking culture. Drawing on scores of in-depth interviews, Merry White explores the personal and social consequences of a problem that is fully recognized as a national issue in Japan. She pays particular attention to the plight of the returnee Japanese child--a stranger in his or her own land. "In this knowledgeable and perceptive book, [Merry White] describes how families who have returned from prolonged sojourns abroad endure damaged careers and spoiled educational prospects."--Joan Cassell, The New York Times Book Review "An invaluable source of insights into the problems that Japanese overseas face and the strategies they pursue, both in adjusting to life in foreign countries and in preparing for what may or may not be a hospitable welcome when they arrive back home."--Theodore C. Bestor, The Journal of Asian Studies Originally published in 1992. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Intercultural Families And Schooling In Japan Experiences Issues And Challenges written by and has been published by Candlin & Mynard this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-09-01 with Family & Relationships categories.

The purpose of this book is to show how research on families can be used to offer inspiration, suggestions, and guidance to intercultural families choosing to school their children in the regular Japanese school system. Each chapter is written by a parent or parents who are themselves researchers and thus bring their skills to the task of writing about issues which have affected their families, and are likely to affect other families in similar ways. There are also suggestions for other non-Japanese parents coping with similar issues. The book is divided into three sections: The first, “Finding our own way”, deals with children’s and parents’ struggles with identity and inclusion in Japanese schools and society. The second, “Dealing with the Japanese school system”, offers narratives and advice on such topics as coping with homework and dealing with more than one school system, as well as what government-accredited Japanese overseas schools have to offer. The third section, “Coping with challenges”, examines the experiences of families where children are “different” because they have physical or intellectual challenges, or live with foster or adoptive families. The book concludes with a narrative about a family who made the decision to remove their children from the Japanese system entirely and send them abroad for schooling. The authors of the chapters in this book are all current or former university faculty, living in different areas of Japan. Some, who live in highly-populated urban areas, have had ample opportunities to locate educational options for their children, while others, living in rural communities, have had to struggle to advocate for their children’s inclusion in mainstream classes. Their stories are all compelling and their advice is certain to be helpful to those planning to or already raising children in Japan. This book will also be of value to researchers and educators, particularly those with an interest in bilingualism, intercultural families, and cross-cultural issues, along with anyone wishing to learn more about contemporary Japanese society.
