Japan entered World War II with the third-largest navy in the world, after those of Great Britain and the United States. The 18 heavy cruisers of the Imperial Japanese Navy were a combined force of large and powerful ships designed for attack rather than defense. Long, low to the water, heavy, and fast, they looked like no other nation's cruisers, with their flush decks and curved hulls, topped off with large, pagoda-like tower bridges. Designers of the heavy cruisers gave them a highly original arrangement of curved funnels, turrets, and masts. They were at once beautiful and deadly as they sliced through the waves on their way to Pacific battles. Packed with more than 90 black-and-white photos, six color profiles, and line drawings.

At the beginning of World War II, the Imperial Japanese Navy operated a light cruiser force of 20 ships, and added another five during the course of the war. These fast ships, carrying seaplanes and heavy torpedo armament, generally were used as flagships for destroyer flotillas and submarine squadrons. Of these, nine were sunk by U.S. or British submarines, 11 were sunk by U.S. aircraft, two were sunk by U.S. torpedo boats or destroyers, and three were still afloat at the end of the war. Includes never before published photos!

Designed with little more than a passing nod to the international naval treaties of the inter-war period, the Imperial Japanese Navy's heavy cruisers were fast and heavily armed. Like the other vessels of the Japanese Navy, the heavy cruisers were technologically superior to and far more innovative than their Allied rivals, whom they met in many of the major Pacific Theatre battles, including Midway and Leyte Gulf. Mark Stille continues his study of the IJN of WWII with this fascinating topic, addressing the design and development of all 18 ships in the six heavy cruiser classes, from pre-war construction and mid-war alterations, to their operational histories and eventual fates.

The ShipCraft series provides in-depth information about building and modifying model kits of famous warship types. Lavishly illustrated, each book takes the modeller through a brief history of the subject class, highlighting differences between sister-ships and changes in their appearance over their careers. This includes paint schemes and camouflage, featuring colour profiles and highly-detailed line drawings and scale plans. The modelling section reviews the strengths and weaknesses of available kits, lists commercial accessory sets for super-detailing of the ships, and provides hints on modifying and improving the basic kit. This is followed by an extensive photographic gallery of selected high-quality models in a variety of scales, and the book concludes with a section on research references books, monographs, large-scale plans and relevant websites.rnrnThis volume is devoted to the largest cruisers in the Imperial Japanese Navy. Built in defiance of treaty restrictions, they were the fastest and most powerful heavy cruisers of their day, and were heavily engaged in every campaign from Pearl Harbor to the end of the Pacific War.

Like their heavy cruiser brethren, the light cruisers built by the Imperial Japanese Navy in the build-up to WWII paid little more than lip service to the international naval treaties that were intended to keep the naval powers on a level playing field. The eight classes of light cruiser developed by the IJN were fast, well-armed, and technologically superior to the fleets the Allied powers could bring to bear. Serving with distinction across the Pacific Theatre, the IJN's light cruisers were committed to such actions as Midway and Leyte Gulf. Mark Stille continues Osprey's coverage of the IJN of WWII, with this concise and complete study of all 25 ships of the 8 light cruisers classes, from their design and development through to their ultimate fates. Detailed Osprey artwork and rare period photographs from the Fukui collection held in Kure, Japan, illustrate this discussion and provide great visual references for some of the most advanced naval vessels of WWII.

With ship profiles and original artwork, this study explores the warships that fought World War II's last pure surface battle, the battle itself, and why the outnumbered US Navy prevailed. The Battle of the Komandorski Islands was unique among World War II naval battles. It was the last daytime naval surface battle of World War II where aircraft played no role, and saw a squadron of US Navy cruisers and destroyers engage their Japanese counterparts over a convoy to reinforce Attu and Kiska. Exploring the warships, the battle, and why it was won, naval expert Mark Lardas explains that due to an intelligence failure, the Japanese escort was twice the size expected, with the US outnumbered 2:1 in heavy and light cruisers. Although both sides had the same number of destroyers (four each) the Japanese destroyers were newer and more powerful than their US counterparts. A 12-hour brawl of a surface action took place. Despite being badly outnumbered and badly outgunned – and even though the largest US ship was dead in the water at one point – the US Navy emerged victorious. Illustrated with archive photos, profiles of all the major warships involved, and action scenes illustrating key moments in the battle, this book explains how the US victory was achieved, and particularly highlights the importance of superior damage control.

The Imperial Japanese Navy went to war with 17 light cruisers and another three cruiser-sized training ships. Of these, most were 5,500-ton ships designed to act as destroyer squadron flagships. This made them much different in capabilities and mission from their American counterparts. During the war, the Japanese built another five light cruisers, all but one of which maintained the design premise of being able to serve as destroyer squadron flagships. During the war, Japanese light cruisers were active throughout the Pacific performing many missions in addition to their flagship duties. Mark Stille continues Osprey's coverage of the IJN of WWII with this concise and complete study of all 25 ships, from their design and development to their ultimate fates. Detailed Osprey artwork and rare period photographs from the Fukui collection held in Kure, Japan illustrate this discussion.

The design of four-member Japanese Takao-class heavy cruisers built between 1927-1928 was based on earlier Myōkō-class heavy cruisers. The Takao-class was better armored and equipped including the main artillery being modified to engage air targets. The Takao-class had a distinctive look thanks to the massive superstructure and the first chimney being inclined towards the second one which was set vertically. Only the lead ship of her class, i.e. Takao survived the war and was scrapped in 1946. The latest volume of the Super Drawings in 3D series harvests many years of Janusz Skulski's work who is considered the world's best Imperial Japanese Navy expert. Takao renders by Waldemar Góralski include the majority of adjustments made by Janusz Skulski and depict Takao in the camouflage pattern form the last days of the World War II.
