"Japan has managed to build up one of the most consistent and instantly recognizable styles of modern architecture - and has done this in hardly more than a decade. The full impact of the international modern movement did not strike Japanese architects until well after World War II, and then their vision was concentrated on the work of one master: Le Corbusier. Yet in a remarkably short time after that, they turned from copying to creating , subtly flavoring the international movement with the essence of their own country. Today Japan is one of the growth points of world architecture. Why this sudden surge of sophistication? How could so many Japanese architects step up so quickly and with such unison into command of the modern building arts and technologies? How genuine is their style? The question of its validity and the reasons for its rapid maturation provide the theme underlying this study of the new direction which Japanese architecture is now forcefully taking. Robin Boyd finds some reasons in the inescapable if indirect influences of Japan's great architectural traditions, some in the social background of today, and some in the special kind of insularity which colors the Japanese experience - poised, as they see it, between East and West. The new work of a number of Japanese architects is illustrated and analyzed. Some of these architects are world famous: all are working in the forefront of national development and share responsibility for the vigor and promise that cannot fail to excite a visitor from the West." --

What links are there between Piet Mondrian’s unfinished work Victory Boogie Woogie (1942–4) and post-war Japanese and Japanese-style architectural photography? As far back as the mid-1950s, critics and photographers were inclined to link Mondrian’s painting with modern Japanese architecture and some historians were to go so far as to assert that Mondrian himself had been influenced by traditional Japanese architecture.Powerful associations such as these contributed to the coming together of Western and Japanese architectural modernity. They also underpinned the survival of Japonisme in architecture, or put another way, of the neo-Japonisme that emerged after the Second World War. However, while this kinship between Mondrian’s abstraction and the aesthetic of Japanese architecture is little apparent in architecture, it does show in architectural photography. This book, which takes a sidelong look at Mondrian, examines the works of the foremost among Japanese and American architectural photographers in an effort to interpret the dynamics of how the world of architecture was Japanized between 1945 and 1985.

Modernism was instrumental in the development of twentieth and twenty-first century Scandinavian architecture, for it captured a progressive, urbane character that was inextricably associated with, and embraced the social programmes of the Nordic welfare states. Recognized internationally for its sensitivity and responsiveness to place and locale, and its thoughtful use of materials and refined detailing, Nordic architecture continues to evolve and explore its modernist roots. This new book covers the romantic and classical architectural foundations of Nordic modernism; the development of Nordic Functionalism; the maturing and expansion of Nordic modern architecture in the post-war period; international influences on Scandinavian modernism at the end of the twentieth century and finally, the global and local currents found in contemporary Nordic architecture. Superbly illustrated with 100 colour images.

This is the first book to examine the development of the town hall during the twentieth century and the way in which these civic buildings have responded to the dramatic political, social and architectural changes which took place during the period. Following an overview of the history of the town hall as a building type, it examines the key themes, variations and lessons which emerged during the twentieth century. This is followed by 20 case studies from around the world which include plans, sections and full-colour illustrations. Each of the case studies examines the town hall's procurement, the selection of its architect and the building design, and critically analyses its success and contribution to the type’s development. The case studies include: Copenhagen Town Hall, Denmark, Martin Nyrop Stockholm City Hall, Sweden, Ragnar Ostberg Hilversum Town Hall, the Netherlands, Willem M.
