The perfect transliteration of the characters used by Japanese potters is a matter on which no foreigner living may dogmati'ze, indeed, various meanings may properly be assigned to many of these characters; but I feel no doubt whatever that the renderings of the marks in my volume are substantially correct, for they have been passed under review by four accomplished native scholars. The Japanese distinguish between Earthenware, which corresponds to the English classification, and porcelain. Intermediate between these two is the modern manufacture (confined to one or two firms) of what is called in Japan Hard Earthenware, a generic term corresponding to faience or semi-porcelain but commercially applied t0'an Ironstone China.
