"In the age of globalization of higher education, there have been calls for research that investigates international students' cross-cultural transitioning experiences and their career counselling needs. Compared to initial adjustment to the host country, little is known about reentry transition to the home country, and the available literature suggests that female international students experience more reentry difficulties than male students. Yet, gender and social contexts have largely been overlooked in the reentry literature, and no research to this date has specifically investigated how a North American degree impacts the lives of women upon reentry to their home countries. Therefore, a narrative inquiry was conducted to answer the overarching question: How do Japanese women, who have completed a university degree in North America, construct their stories of the process of pursuing a degree and returning to Japan? Informed by feminist standpoint theory as an epistemological framework, specific attention was paid to the role of gender and sociocultural factors that influence these women's reentry experiences. The participants were 14 Japanese women (age: 25-49) who returned to Japan following the completion of a university degree in North America. The results elucidated how gender-based hierarchical structures in Japanese society impacted women's motivation for an international education and the challenges they faced after returning to Japan. Consequently, they positioned themselves along the continuum of conformity to non-conformity, which accompanies a range of psychological responses such as self-silencing, withdrawal, and acceptance. Overall, the standpoint of North American educated Japanese women provided fresh perspectives on issues such as Japanese employment practices, as well as future directions for research. Responding to the call for providing pre-reentry programs that accommodate the needs of returning students, this study also offered recommendations for service providers working with international student populations." --

As Japan comes to grips with a decade of economic malaise after its spectacular post-war growth record, how will Japanese society react? Contributors to this volume examine the challenges ahead for Japan in the fields of politics, economics, sociology, environment and business. This multidisciplinary inquiry looks for areas of continuity and for new directions in government, business and social policy and practice. Also examined is how Western students should approach the study of Japan; what new directions should institutions take to ensure that students learn about the `real' Japan? Written by Canadian academics, the articles in this volume will be of interest to academics and policy-makers studying or teaching about contemporary Japan.

This compelling study of a previously overlooked vice industry explores the larger structural forces that led to the growth of prostitution in Japan, the Pacific region, and the North American West at the turn of the twentieth century. Combining very personal accounts with never before examined Japanese sources, historian Kazuhiro Oharazeki traces these women’s transnational journeys from their origins in Japan to their arrival in Pacific Coast cities. He analyzes their responses to the oppression they faced from pimps and customers, as well as the opposition they faced from American social reformers and Japanese American community leaders. Despite their difficult circumstances, Oharazeki finds, some women were able to parlay their experience into better jobs and lives in America. Though that wasn’t always the case, their mere presence here nonetheless paved the way for other Japanese women to come to America and enter the workforce in more acceptable ways. By focusing on this “invisible” underground economy, Japanese Prostitutes in the North American West sheds new light on Japanese American immigration and labor histories and opens a fascinating window into the development of the American West.

Meiji Japan In Global History written by Catherine L. Phipps and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-30 with History categories.

This book examines Meiji Japan (1868–1912) to demonstrate the complex interplay between Japanese nation-building and the country’s engagement with global processes. "Meiji Japan" refers to an era (1868–1912) that—as experienced from within—had an undetermined duration and extent. The length of the emperor’s reign was not preordained, and the country’s territorial borders were not as well-defined or wide-reaching at the start of the period as at the close. Questions about who was represented by and who identified with the emerging nation-state remained in flux as Japan’s modern political, economic, legal, and sociocultural parameters were being created. Basing their inquiries on the idea of Meiji Japan in global history, the authors examine Japan’s rise on the modern world stage, focusing on the individuals—whether government leaders, intellectual elites, indigenous communities, or colonial migrants—who both shaped and were shaped by this era of global connectivity. Localized challenges and supranational opportunities meant people were in motion, as territorial expansion redefined marginalized groups, and as diverse populations moved to and from colonized and foreign lands. This volume seeks to excavate how people back then positioned themselves in a specific time and place, just as people in the twenty-first century seek to give Meiji Japan meaning at the sesquicentennial commemoration of its start. The chapters in this book were originally published in the journal Japan Forum.

Japan began to fascinate the West after the account of Marco Polos sojourn in China. This set off an interest in the oriental world. The Portuguese, being the first, arrived in Japan in 1543 which was followed by others. The experience Japan had with Europeans put upon itself isolation for about 200 years. After the forceful opening by Mathew Perry in 1853, many Westerners again began to arrive in Japan. Later during the 1980s, there was an influx of migrant workers which become a hot topic of debate. The book throws much light onto the historical background as well as the events that lead up to the present state of affairs in relation to issues of discrimination, crimes and problems related to foreigners.

Immigrant Japan written by Gracia Liu-Farrer and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-04-15 with History categories.

Immigrant Japan? Sounds like a contradiction, but as Gracia Liu-Farrer shows, millions of immigrants make their lives in Japan, dealing with the tensions between belonging and not belonging in this ethno-nationalist country. Why do people want to come to Japan? Where do immigrants with various resources and demographic profiles fit in the economic landscape? How do immigrants narrate belonging in an environment where they are "other" at a time when mobility is increasingly easy and belonging increasingly complex? Gracia Liu-Farrer illuminates the lives of these immigrants by bringing in sociological, geographical, and psychological theories—guiding the reader through life trajectories of migrants of diverse backgrounds while also going so far as to suggest that Japan is already an immigrant country.
