C'est mettre en garde contre les facilités d'une lecture immédiate, partisane, qui rabattrait le philosophique sur le social : c'est inviter à une lecture expérimentation qui se donne pour tâche d'établir un rapport avec la critique de l'ontologie fondamentale développée dans le magnum opus d'Adorno. Qu'est ce que le Jargon ? Le jargon est un maniement de la langue qui se comprend d'abord par le charme magique qu'il entend exercer. Cette sacralisation du langage va de pair ave une mythologie de l'Etre et le pathos de l'authenticité. Empruntant la voie feuerbachienne de la critique de la religion, Adorno dévoile derrière la cérémonie de la langue la misère de l'ontologie. Nationalisme, mépris de la réalité sociale, repli sur soi, besoin de quelque chose de solide, autant de voies pour perdre l'objet, le monde, les choses. Arme de la résistance, nerf de la dialectique, la négation déterminée permet le passage de la critique du besoin ontologique à la critique immanente de l'ontologie. Cette méthode philosophique, en même temps qu'elle réintroduit " la puissance du négatif ", pose que c'est par sa détermination qu'un phénomène va au-delà de lui-même. Ouverture des possibles, la négation déterminée soumet la théorie critique à une tension entre l'exil et l'utopie. La mise en œuvre de la négation déterminée donne au jargon son statut. Plutôt que d'un affrontement idéologique, il s'agit d'une controverse philosophique sur la possibilité de la philosophie aujourd'hui. Affrontés à ce polemos, E. Escoubas et G. Petitdemange retracent les trajets complexes où l'écart se creuse d'autant plus qu'une homologie peut se percevoir en profondeur. A propos de Hegel, un rapport à la " pensée nouvelle " (F. Rosenzweig), de la critique de la métaphysique, il convient de confronter destruction de l'histoire de l'ontologie et dialectique négative, pour mieux les séparer.

Construction of identity has constituted a vigorous source of debate in the Caribbean from the early days of colonization to the present, and under the varying guises of independence, departmentalization, dictatorship, overseas collectivity and occupation. Given the strictures and structures of colonialism long imposed upon the colonized subject, the (re)makings of identity have proven anything but evident when it comes to determining authentic expressions and perceptions of the postcolonial self. By way of close readings of both constructions in literature and the construction of literature, Architextual Authenticity: Constructing Literature and Literary Identity in the French Caribbean proposes an original, informative frame of reference for understanding the long and ever-evolving struggle for social, cultural, historical and political autonomy in the region. Taking as its point of focus diverse canonical and lesser-known texts from Guadeloupe, Martinique and Haiti published between 1958 and 2013, this book examines the trope of the house (architecture) and the meta-textual construction of texts (architexture) as a means of conceptualizing and articulating how authentic means of expression are and have been created in French-Caribbean literature over the greater part of the past half-century - whether it be in the context of the years leading up to or following the departmentalization of France's overseas colonies in the 1940's, the wrath of Hurricane Hugo in 1989, or the devastating Haiti earthquake of 2010.

This comparative study examines the prose writings of the best-known cosmopolitan authors of the Third French Republic: the modernists Jean Giraudoux, Valery Larbaud and Paul Morand, and the best-selling popular writer Maurice Dekobra. It investigates what constituted the 'cosmopolitanism' that they publicly proclaimed between the World Wars, a classification which has been widely accepted by commentators ever since. In particular, it considers whether conventional definitions of cosmopolitanism - as an unproblematic attitude of xenophilia coupled with wanderlust, or as an ecumenical humanism - can co-exist with the blind spots and prejudices of its practitioners. This book offers a comprehensive reinterpretation of the writers' identity politics based on their approach to Otherness (gender, race, nationality, political affiliation) as well as to formal innovation. It argues that cosmopolitanism is the organizing principle for their literary and existential attempts at cultivating authentic Selfhood. Through its socio-political embeddedness, this cosmopolitanism reveals the ideological and cultural preoccupations of the day.
