Peuple autochtone de la Nouvelle-Calédonie, les Kanak connaissent un échec dramatique à l'école française. En 1977, ils ne sont que 5,80 % des 241 bacheliers. Dans sa thèse de doctorat, l'auteure montre, en 1990, que la cause de l'échec scolaire des Océaniens, dont les Mélanésiens, est le passage de leur langue maternelle non écrite à une langue d'enseignement écrite. En 1997 et 1998, l'application positive de ses propositions dans une école maternelle à Thio permet d'affi rmer que le plurilinguisme et le pluriculturalisme précoces sont possibles avec une langue maternelle à tradition orale, le français langue seconde adapté à la tradition orale, et l'anglais sous forme de comptines. Quel que soit le choix du peuple calédonien le 4 octobre 2020, la langue française demeurera le lien sociolinguistique fédérateur de toutes les ethnies de la Nouvelle- Calédonie. Enfin, le titre de l'ouvrage, Taramoin, est le prénom de l'institutrice kanak qui a participé à l'application des propositions.
