Les recherches qui ont été faites jusqu'à aujourd'hui ont permis de façonner une certaine image de l'explorateur. C'est cette représentation de l'explorateur qui a marqué de nombreuses générations de Québécoises et de Québécois. La facilité de plus en plus grande de consulter les archives nous permet cependant de mieux cerner les personnes historiques. C'est cette nouvelle capacité de recherche qui a poussé l'auteur, Jacques Gagnon, à refaire la recherche sur Jean Nicollet. Au fil des nouvelles sources, il a donc pu amener une nouvelle vision du personnage, l'amenant même à faire admettre d'importantes modifications aux biographies officielles de Jean Nicollet: le Dictionnaire biographique du Canada (DBC/DCB) et Wikipédia ont ainsi retravaillé leurs publications afin de les ajuster.
