Husain menjadi pembuka jalan untuk memahami perkembangan kota dengan cara mengeksplorasi fungsi sungai secara signifikan, baik dalam perkembangan fisik kota maupun perkembangan masyarakatnya. Artikel ini secara khusus mengonfirmasikan bahwa sungai di Kota Malang tidak hanya sekedar sebagai alat transportasi, tetapi juga telah melahirkan kebudayaan. Sungai, menurut Sarkawi, menjadi sumber kesuburan di sepanjang kota sehingga secara bertahap mampu menyumbang wujud-wujud peradaban yang tidak ternilai. Perkembangan Kota sangat ditentukan atau mengikuti aliran sungai. Hal ini tampak dengan hadirnya berbagai gedung-gedung pemerintah, pemukiman penduduk, dan perusahaan di sepanjang aliran sungai tersebut.

As key nodes that connected ancient silk routes traversing China, Japan and India, trading hubs, towns and cities in Java and Sumatra and other places in Asia were key destination points for merchants, monks and other itinerants plying these routes.Recent archaeological excavations in countries bordering the South China Sea and around the Indian Ocean unveiled remarkable similarities in artifacts recovered both on land and from the sea. Now that this study is completed and I wish to make due acknowledg ment to all those who have in any degree contributed towards its realization, my thoughts turn in the first place to the one to whom this book is dedicated. It is a great grief to me that he who took such an intense interest in my work has not lived to see its conclusion. It was he who in the beginning urged me to venture upon this course of study and whose encouragement helped me in moments of de spondency. The high standard which, with his keen and critical judgment, he set for his own work, was an example to me, and I shall strive to maintain it in my future studies. Not only did he help me to lay the foundation of my knowledge of archive science, but he was also my guide in a field new to me in many respects, that of Asian maritime trade.
