Jenseits des Lustprinzips (1920). Ausgehend von einer Analyse des Wiederholungszwangs entwirft Freud eine Konzeption der Verdrängung und des Triebes. Die Abhandlung gilt als Wende in Freuds theoretischer Entwicklung. Die Arbeit enthält drei theoretische Neuerungen: Die Beziehung zwischen dem psychischen System, das die Verdrängung ausübt, und dem Verdrängten wird neu gefaßt. Als verdrängende Instanz gilt Freud jetzt nicht mehr, wie in seinen früheren Arbeiten, das Bewußtsein, sondern ein Ich, das in seinem Kern unbewußt ist. Das Ich und das Es (1923). Freud entwickelte darin ein Modell der Psyche und ihrer Funktionsweise. Das Seelenleben wird demnach durch die Beziehungen zwischen drei Instanzen bestimmt, die schrittweise auseinander hervorgehen: dem Es, dem Ich und dem Über-Ich. Dieses genetische Strukturmodell der Psyche wird meist als zweite Topik bezeichnet, also als zweites räumliches Modell, im Unterschied zur ersten Topik, die Freud in der Traumdeutung von 1900 vorgelegt hatte. Massenpsychologie und Ich-Analyse (1921). In dem Essay stellt Freud dar, welche psychischen Mechanismen innerhalb von Massenbewegungen wirksam sind. Eine Masse ist nach Freud ein »provisorisches Wesen, das aus heterogenen Elementen besteht, die sich für einen Augenblick miteinander verbunden haben.«
