Enlightened War investigates the multiple and complex interactions between warfare and Enlightenment thought. Although the Enlightenment is traditionally identified with the ideals of progress, eternal peace, reason, and self-determination, Enlightenment discourse unfolded during a period of prolonged European warfare from the Seven Years' War to the Napoleonic conquest of Europe. The essays in this volume explore the palpable influence of war on eighteenth-century thought and argue for an ideological affinity among war, Enlightenment thought, and its legacy. In the wake of the French Revolution, history was no longer imagined as a cyclical process in which the succession of ruling dynasties was as predictable as the change in the seasons. Contemporaries wrestled with the meaning of this historical rupture, which represented both the progress of the Enlightenment and the darkness of the Terreur. French authors discussed the political events in their country, but they were not the only ones to do so. As the effects of the French Revolution became more palpable across the border, German authors pondered their implications in newspapers, political pamphlets, and historiographical treatises. German women also participated in these debates, but they often embedded their political commentary in literary texts because they were discouraged, and sometimes even barred, from publishing in explicitly political and public venues. As such, literature, in the sense of belles lettres, had a compensatory function for women: it allowed them to engage in political discussion without explicitly encroaching on certain domains that were perceived as a male preserve. As women writers explored the uses of literature for political commentary they adapted major literary genres in order to consolidate their position in the late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century literary sphere. Those genres included domestic fiction, the historical novel, historical tragedy, autobiography, the Robinsonade,and the Bildungsroman. Women writers challenged the images of women traditionally portrayed in these genres: dutiful daughter, submissive wife, caring mother, tantalizing mistress, angelic figure, and passive victim. Gender and Genre discusses six women writers who replaced these traditional female types with women warriors and emigrants as protagonists in texts published between 1795 and 1821: Therese Huber, Caroline de la Motte Fouqué, Christine Westphalen, Regula Engel, Sophie von La Roche, and Henriette Frölich. These authors’ protagonists question traditional images of passive femininity, yet their battered bodies also depict the precarious position of women in general, and women writers in particular, during this period. Because women writers were attacked by their male counterparts who attempted to halt their foray into the literary marketplace, these texts are as much about power dynamics in the German literary establishment as they are about French politics.

For generations of German-speaking Jews, the works of Goethe and Schiller epitomized the world of European high culture, a realm that Jews actively participated in as both readers and consumers. Yet from the 1830s on, Jews writing in German also produced a vast corpus of popular fiction that was explicitly Jewish in content, audience, and function. Middlebrow Literature and the Making of German-Jewish Identity offers the first comprehensive investigation in English of this literature, which sought to navigate between tradition and modernity, between Jewish history and the German present, and between the fading walls of the ghetto and the promise of a new identity as members of a German bourgeoisie. This study examines the ways in which popular fiction assumed an unprecedented role in shaping Jewish identity during this period. During the age of empires (1800–1900), marriage was a key transition in the life course worldwide, a rite of passage everywhere with major cultural significance. This volume presents an overview of the period with essays on Courtship and Ritual; Religion, State and Law; Kinship and Social Networks; the Family Economy; Love and Sex; the Breaking of Vows; and Representations of Marriage. Using this framework, this volume explores global trends in marriage. In nineteenth-century Western Europe, marriage was increasingly regarded as the only way to reach happiness and self-fulfilment. In the United States former slaves obtained the right to marry, leading to a convergence in marriage patterns between the black and white populations. In Latin America, marriage remained less common, but marriage rates were nevertheless on the rise. In African and Asian societies, European colonial powers tried to change indigenous marriage customs like polygamy and arranged marriages, but had limited success. Across the globe, in a time of turbulent political and economic change, marriage and the family remained crucial institutions, the linchpins of society that they had been for centuries.

Um 1740 gelangen die in der Frühaufklärung noch getrennten Epochenkräfte von Pietismus und Rationalismus (vgl. Bd. 5/I u. 5/II) in enge Berührung, und dies zuerst und dominant in der bislang zu wenig beachteten Lyrik. Als Medium des Gefühls verschwistert sich diese mit den beiden religiösen Avantgardeströmungen der Zeit und wird dadurch zu einem Organ der Empfindsamkeit: Die Poesie des Pietismus entwickelt als erste empfindsame Tendenzen (Teil I). Die meisten Dichter der Empfindsamkeit - überwiegend studierte Theologen - neigen sich jedoch der 'Neologie' zu. Diese sucht, von englischen Vorbildern ausgehend, pietistisches 'Herz' und Leibniz-/Wolffschen 'Kopf' ins Gleichgewicht zu bringen und erweist sich damit als Theologie der Empfindsamkeit, in deren Reformprogramm die Poesie (von der Hymne bis zum biblischen Epos) einen hohen Stellenwert besitzt (Teil II). Die Lyrik übernimmt bis hin zu Klopstocks rituellem Gedicht in Inhalt und Form religiöse Funktionen. Dabei dient sie der Religion und emanzipiert sich doch zugleich von ihr: Einerseits wird sie in der Nachempfindung biblischer Poesie zum Sprachrohr göttlicher Offenbarung und zum Organ neologischer Frömmigkeit und Moral, andererseits und zugleich zum "Ausdruck wahrer Empfindung" und gewinnt somit - auch in der Sakralisierung ihres Selbstverständnisses und Weltbezuges - an Autonomie und modernem Gattungsprofil hinzu.
