Since Karl Rahner posited the importance of the nature of the human as the starting point for theological reflection, the field of Christian anthropology has been one where very basic questions - and much creative theologizing - have been focused. For example, liberation theologians have had much to say about the presumptions inherent in classical definitions of human being and have pointed up the vital idea of social location as an integral part of human experience. English summary: The way in which the Christian faith was shaped by Easter does not signify comfort in the hereafter; it has to prove its truth in the current significance of the trinitarian act of resurrection for the finite life in this world. Based on the borderline experience of death and against the backdrop of a criteriology for the recognition of a lived life, Otmar Meuffels deals with the question of the truth of human beings from the perspectives of biblical revelation, official church doctrine and systematic theology as well as philosophy and literature. In this way, he makes it possible to recognize how divine judgment and redemption are a liberating force in the present time. An eschatology which shows such a strong commitment takes the pastoral standard of the Second Vatican Council, the mission of the church as the successor in the charity of Jesus Christ, seriously, and sees respect for life as the guiding principle of the hope for perfection. So werden die alttestamentliche Verheissung von Leben aus dem Tod, Jesu Ansage des Reiches Gottes und die kreuzeschristologische bzw. trinitarische Entfaltung des gottlichen Erlosungshandelns auf die aktuelle Problematik von Identitat und Authentizitat des menschlichen Lebens bezogen. Die hier aufbrechenden Fragen nach der Moglichkeit von Erinnerung, Anerkennung und Wahrheit fordern eine theologische Rechtfertigung der glaubigen Hoffnung uber den Tod hinaus, die der endlichen und vielfach gefahrdeten Existenz des Menschen in der Welt gerecht werden kann. In Auseinandersetzung mit den Positionen von Honneth, Ricoeur, Levinas, Putnam, Dalferth und anderen nimmt Otmar Meuffels diese Herausforderung an und entfaltet einen eigenstandigen eschatologischen Entwurf, dessen Massstab die Liebe des Mensch gewordenen Gottes bildet.
