Adaptability is the hallmark of the Jesuit charism. From early on, they spread rapidly, to the Far East, to North and South America, to Africa and eventually to Australasia. This new collection tells the stories of a few of these Jesuits, from different continents and eras – their successes and failures, their frustrations and hopes – in the belief that their commitment and struggles will prove inspirational once again today.

Before the word 'globalisation' was invented, there were the Jesuits. Defining themselves not by any particular place but by a universal outreach, the Jesuits embraced the whole world. Linking Zambia to China, Paraguay to Lake Huron, the Jesuits were a global network almost from their foundation. Ready to go wherever the needs were great and the opportunities promising, what they were to do when they arrived remained to be discovered, depending on what they found. Adaptability became the Jesuit hallmark. Concerned not only with the geographical boundaries of our world, they probed and explored the boundaries between spiritual and secular worlds. Jesuit Lives tells the stories of these pioneers, allowing you to join them as they don traditional Confucian dress in China, negotiate the territories of the Huron and Iroquois in North America, pass through Victoria Falls, following the Zambezi river through Africa and grapple with the message of the Gospel in modern times. Divided into five sections, and featuring contributions by leading Jesuits, Jesuit Lives makes the experience and wisdom of these Jesuits accessible to us today. Book jacket.

In an ever-changing and unpredictable world, Ignatius wanted Jesuits to be alert to the needs of people in the concrete circumstances of their lives, and to be free to respond appropriately. Rooted in the practice of discernment and united through the vow of obedience, the Jesuits were to be flexible and creative, going wherever there was ‘the greater need’, always keeping in mind ‘the greater service of God and the more universal good’. This little book tries to encapsulate some of the responses the Jesuits have made through the ages, by focusing on the lives of a few remarkable individuals. The variety is suggestive of the Jesuits’ range of activities: from the hidden ministry of John Sullivan to the public protests of Dan Berrigan; from the unimaginable journeys of Francis Xavier to the theological insights of Karl Rahner; from the heroism of Edmund Campion to the inspiring leadership of Pedro Arrupe. There are many other striking stories that need to be told, of course, that are not included here: the mission to Ethiopia in the sixteenth century; the initiatives of the Jesuits in China, the South America and present-day Canada in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries; the vast educational network that made the Jesuits ‘the schoolmasters of Europe’; and the numerous Jesuit astronomers, scientists, artists and poets who have enriched human learning and culture down to the present day.

In the years before the Second Vatican Council great numbers of young men, typically just out of high school, entered a Jesuit novitiate to begin the thirteen-year march to the priesthood. Most would leave the Jesuits, sometimes long after ordination, and the question often is whether they failed their church or their church failed them. In often brutally frank disclosures, a number of these former Jesuits talk about their lives: why they became novices and took lifetime vows and then why they left, sometimes just walking away after years in the priesthood. What they have to say about themselves exposes a world once shrouded in secrecy.

"Since its founding by Ignatius of Loyola in 1540, the Society of Jesus ("The Jesuits") has been intimately involved in the unfolding of the modern world. The young Jesuit order played a crucial role in the Counter Reformation, especially in Poland, southern Germany, and several other parts of Europe. The Jesuits were also participants in the establishment and spread of European empires, engaging in missionary activity in east and south Asia in the 16th and 17th centuries, and becoming central to the spreading of Christianity in the New World. At the same time, Jesuits often tangled with the Roman curia and the Pope, leading to the suppression of the Jesuits in 1773. After the subsequent restoration of the order in 1814, the Jesuits continued to be leaders in Catholic education and theology. In 2013 Jorge Bergoglio became the first Jesuit Pope, taking the name Pope Francis I. In this book, Markus Friedrich presents the first comprehensive account of the Jesuits from a non-Catholic perspective. Drawing on his expertise as a historian of the early modern world, Friedrich situates the Jesuit order within the wider perspective of European history. In particular, he places the Jesuits in the context of social, cultural, and imperial history, showing that the Jesuits were not monolithic but rather were very sensitive to local context and that the order's core texts, especially Ignatius's Spiritual Exercises, were templates to engage with, rather than instructions manuals to be followed slavishly"--

Being A Jesuit In Renaissance Italy written by Camilla Russell and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-04-19 with History categories.

A new history illuminates the Society of Jesus in its first century from the perspective of those who knew it best: the early Jesuits themselves. The Society of Jesus was established in 1540. In the century that followed, thousands sought to become Jesuits and pursue vocations in religious service, teaching, and missions. Drawing on scores of unpublished biographical documents housed at the Roman Jesuit Archive, Camilla Russell illuminates the lives of those who joined the Society, building together a religious and cultural presence that remains influential the world over. Tracing Jesuit life from the Italian provinces to distant missions, Russell sheds new light on the impact and inner workings of the Society. The documentary record reveals a textual network among individual members, inspired by Ignatius of Loyola’s Spiritual Exercises. The early Jesuits took stock of both quotidian and spiritual experiences in their own records, which reflect a community where the worldly and divine overlapped. Echoing the Society’s foundational writings, members believed that each Jesuit’s personal strengths and inclinations offered a unique contribution to the whole—an attitude that helps explain the Society’s widespread appeal from its first days. Focusing on the Jesuits’ own words, Being a Jesuit in Renaissance Italy offers a new lens on the history of spirituality, identity, and global exchange in the Renaissance. What emerges is a kind of genetic code—a thread connecting the key Jesuit works to the first generations of Jesuits and the Society of Jesus as it exists today.
