Paul And Jesus written by David Wenham and has been published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002 with Religion categories.

It has been fashionable in New Testament scholarship to view the apostle Paul as a religious "freelancer" who corrupted Jesus' teachings. David Wenham has written convincingly against this view, and in this new book he introduces readers to the "true" Paul. Rooted in a thorough knowledge of the New Testament, this book fulfills two important purposes. First, it provides a superb introduction to Paul himself. Wenham describes Paul's early life, shows the importance of his conversion, and follows him on his missionary journeys. Second, the book explores Paul's relation to Jesus. Writing in dialogue with those who wish to distance Paul from Jesus, Wenham shows just how important the ministry and teaching of Jesus were to Paul's own thought and evangelism. What emerges from a study of Paul's epistles is a man who drew extensively on the traditions of Jesus and faithfully worked to spread his message to the rest of the world.

The six essays in this volume consider the relationship between Jesus and Paul from diverse angles, bringing fresh insights into an area of study that has long lain dormant. Written by established scholars, Jesus and Paul Reconnected explores historical congruity between Christ and his apostle and examines potential connections in their thought, relationships, and practices. Topics considered include the grace of God, treatment of the poor, law and gospel, Peter's connection between the two, the Last Supper, and the death of Christ. Todd Still brings these superb scholars together in hopes of encouraging further conversation and contributing to this growing area of New Testament research. The result is a new and stimulating exploration of these two extraordinary figures of the faith. Contributors: John M. G. Barclay Markus Bockmuehl Beverly Roberts Gaventa Bruce W. No contemporary evangelical scholar is better equipped than England’s F. F. Bruce to refute the proposition, advanced by liberal higher critics, that the theology of Paul represented a departure from that of Jesus. The Rylands Professor of Biblical Criticism and Exegesis at the University of Manchester admits differences in form between the messages of Jesus and Paul, crediting the dissimilarities to different perspectives. But, after Bruce delineates Paul’s gospel (distinguishing between those elements Paul received from God directly and those received from Christian tradition), he demonstrates that the ways of salvation to which Paul and Jesus pointed were identical in essence. Especially when discussing ethical matters, Paul was frequently dependent on Christ’s very words. Bruce concludes by tying Paul’s concept of the Lordship of Jesus to both Old Testament “wisdom” and the earliest Christian confessions.

The relationship between the messages of Jesus and Paul, once dubbed by one scholar 'the second founder of Christianity', must count as one of the most central issues in the study of the New Testament. The essays collected in this volume first survey the history of the study of this problem, and look at some of the main evidence for supposing that the connection between Jesus and Paul was slight, notably the paucity of Paul's references to Jesus' teachings and his seeming disinterest in the earthly Jesus. Other essays take up the question of the continuity between the teaching and the manner of life of the two men, and raise the question how this continuity may have been mediated from one to the other. A final essay raises the question how far Paul's statements about Christ were related to the earthly life of Jesus. This volume brings together a number of substantial contributions to this question, by Professor V.P. Furnish of Dallas, by two scholars from the German Democratic Republic, Professor N. Walter and Dr C. Wolff, and by the editor; some are published for the first time, some are here made available in English for the first time.
