Rei dos Reis, de Nicholas Ray (1961) É um dos filmes mais importantes do gênero Filmes de Cristo. Ele se encontrava em meio a uma encruzilhada social e histórica: criar uma nova imagem de Jesus no Cinema que fosse páreo para o filome de Cecil B. DeMille e que incorporasse as novas questões da sociedade. O diretor, sempre controverso, o roteirista, ainda mais. Os dois realiozaram um filme que jamais foi imitado ou superado no quesito elementos fictícios. Para criar uma nova imagem de Jesus, eles terminaram por esbarrar no inaceitável para os religiosos. No entanto, este filme é um divisor de águas, tudo o que foi feito após ele absorveu ou criticou suas ficções narrativas. É o filme que contém o maior material fictício à respeito da vida de Jesus Cristo e ao mesmo tempo ele só pode ser tão "errado" e revolucionário por que se apropriou do que foi realizado nas séries televisivas dos anos 50. Ele estabelece uma representação de Jesus Cristo tão pouco condizente coma historicidade que ele é sobretudo um "Jesus Americano". Precisa sempre ser melhor conhecido e avaliado.

Neste volume verificamos o fato de que ao longo da história do Cinema, nos anos entre 1895 e 2004, não existiram produções no Brasil sobre a Vida de Cristo. Uma das questões mais importante relativas aos Filmes de Cristo é o antisemitismo. Presente por diversas razões e graus maiores ou menores ao longo da história do Cinema o assunto sempre mereceu atenção e cuidado, devido à propaganda ideológica que perseguia todo um povo. Um aspecto fascinante no filme aqui analisado é que se trata de uma produção francesa. O antissemitismo grassou pela Europa como um todo, mas parece haver algum receio de se tratar da questão na França. Golgotha foi lançado em 1935, portanto, bem anterior aos terríveis eventos da Segunda Grande Guerra Mundial. A ascensão de Adolph Hitler ao poder havia ocorrido em 1934, a Europa vivia então o auge do antisemitismo. Buscamos fazer uma análise cuidadosa dessa obra de Julien Duvivier, um dos mais renomados cineastas daquele país, pois restará sempre a dúvida: Golgotha contém antisemitismo porque isso era cultural ou se tratava de uma peça de propaganda clara contra os Judeus? Talvez o que mais assuste é o fato de não se encontrar estudos sobre esse filme. Há um grande silêncio sobre ele. Estamos rompendo este silêncio, Golgotha, um Filme de Cristo, foi uma virulenta peça de propaganda antissemita realizada na França em 1935. E, não deveria mais ser projetado ou veiculado como vem sendo feito até a atualidade; não ao menos sem o aviso do que será visto.
