Excerpt from Jesus of Nazareth A long time ago there was a carpenter who lived in a little town called Nazareth. His tools were simple and few, and the wood he had to work with was poor, so that he could not do the fine work carpenters do nowadays. His name was Joseph, and he was quite poor. But he married a girl named Mary, and lived humbly and contentedly in his little house in Nazareth. Mary would do the simple housework and would spin flax or grind barley, while Joseph worked busily with his tools, and so they got along quite nicely. One day Mary was made very happy by God whispering in her heart that she should very soon have a little child. That was good news to Mary, and, as she thought about it, she determined that she would name her baby "Jesus." Now, some time after Mary had learned this good news, Joseph came home one day and said they should have to go to Bethlehem, another town, on some matter of business. So he saddled his patient little donkey, and put Mary on its back, and took his staff, and set out for Bethlehem. But when they reached Bethlehem, he found that there was no room for them in any house or at the inn. So he went into a little stable of the inn, where the cattle lived, and he and Mary lay down in the sweet hay to sleep. That very night, as they lay sleeping on the hay in the stable, the little baby was born. The good news had at last come true, and Mary was very happy indeed. She laid her little baby-boy in a manger, a trough out of which the animals ate their hay and grain, which made a very cosy crib for him. Excerpt from The Living Jesus: The Words of Jesus of Nazareth It would seem to be unfortunate that the reader does not have the advantage that the hearers had, of coming to know the personality before being confronted with the announce ment of his identity. For two and a half months did the Great Teacher speak and min ister before he told who he was. He purposely refrained from that announcement, as he said, that he might make himself known before mak ing known his name. The reader will not be so prepared; yet he will not fail to find, if he reads with an open mind, that during his read-1 ing the truth is attested to by his own inner consciousness. Excerpt from The Trial and Crucifixion of Jesus Christ of Nazareth The following pages are the substance of lectures which have been delivered at various times and in many places other than the United Kingdom, and it is in response to the request of many members of my audiences to possess them in per manent form that I venture to publish them. They are purely historical and legal, and the subject has been purposely treated from a formal and prosaic standpoint. Excerpt from The Galilean: A Portrait of Jesus of Nazareth Jesus, it will be seen, limited his action entirely to the Jews. Although his sympathy for those despised by ortho doxy led him to admit pagans into the kingdom of God although he had resided more than once in a pagan country, and once or twice we surprise him in friendly relations with unbelievers it may be said that his life was passed entirely in the very restricted world in which he was born. Excerpt from Thoughts on the Life and Character of Jesus of Nazareth After delivering courses of week-day evening lectures on the Four Gospels for four consecu tive winters, I published, in 1886, a small vo lume entitled, Remarks on the Four Gospels, in which I gave some of the results of my studies. Two years afterwards this work was republished in a much enlarged form with such numerous additions as justified the adop tion of a new title for the work. It was called. Excerpt from The Sayings of Jesus of Nazareth Book on the Sayings of Jesus is no new thing. The great words are the world's most precious possession. However often we traverse them, there is always a wide hinterland of unexplored meaning, where the seekers in the land of thought never tire of wandering. Men have often desired to have them, free from their environment in the Gospels, so that they might be allowed to make their own unimpeded impression. And the desire has frequently been gratified in print. A new attempt must therefore not go out into the world of books without making some effort to justify its own special existence. The earliest compilation of Sayings of Jesus is that now known as the Logia. It comes in all probability from the hand of the disciple Matthew. It is not this journal of Matthew's which is the subject of the present book but all the extant words which fell from the Master's lips, as they are recorded in the New Testament, and in the extra-canonical writings, so far as they can be judged to be genuine words of the Lord. Excerpt from The Life of Jesus of Nazareth: A Study The aim Of this book is to help thoughtful readers of the gospels to discern more clearly the features of him whom those writings inimitably portray. It is avowedly a study rather than a story, and as a companion to the reading of the gospels it seeks to answer some of the questions which are raised by a sympathetic considera tion Of those narratives. These answers are Offered in an unargumentative way, even where the questions are still in debate among scholars. This method has been adopted because technical discussion would be of inter est to but few of those whom the book hopes to serve. On some Of the questions a non - committal attitude is taken in the belief that for the understanding of the life of Jesus it is of little importance which way the decision finally goes. Less attention has been given to questions Of geography and archaeology than to those which have a more vital biographical significance. A word concerning the point of view adopted. The church has inherited a rich treasure Of doctrine concern ing its Lord, the result of patient study and, frequently, of heated controversy. It is customary to approach the gospels with this interpretation of Christ as a premise, and such a study has some unquestionable advantages. Excerpt from Jesus of Nazareth: A Life The ob ect of this book is twofold. First, to bring into prominence the Manliness of Jesus, to give point and emphasis to that saying of Paul's which declares that Jesus was in all points tempted like as we are; and second, to fill up that gap in the record of Jesus' life which includes and shuts us out from all its formative period, and which, in large part, must necessarily be the source and basis of whatever he said and did.
