This book reviews the phenomenology displayed by relativistic jets as well as the most recent theoretical efforts to understand the physical mechanisms at their origin. Relativistic jets have been observed and studied in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) for about half a century and are believed to be fueled by accretion onto a supermassive black hole at the center of the host galaxy. Since the first discovery of relativistic jets associated with so-called "micro-quasars" much more recently, it has seemed clear that much of the physics governing the relativistic outflows in stellar X-ray binaries harboring black holes and in AGN must be common, but acting on very different spatial and temporal scales. With new observational and theoretical results piling up every day, this book attempts to synthesize a consistent, unified physical picture of the formation and disruption of jets in accreting black-hole systems. The chapters in this book offer overviews accessible not only to specialists but also to graduate students and astrophysicists working in other areas. Covered topics comprise Relativistic jets in stellar systems Launching of AGN jets Parsec-scale AGN jets Kiloparsec-scale AGN jets Black hole magnetospheres Theory of relativistic jets The structure and dynamics of the inner accretion disk The origin of the jet magnetic field X-ray observations, phenomenology, and connection with theory

"Accretion and jets occur in many astrophysical systems across a multitude of size and mass scales, and environments. As such, the study of accretion and jet physics has for decades been, and still remains, a hot topic in astrophysics. Accretion onto black holes has particular significance for many reasons, not least because supermassive black holes likely exist at the centres of every galaxy in the universe. The energetic impact of black hole accretion is therefore key to furthering our understanding of the universe as a whole. Over the past few decades we have learned that black hole accretion seems to be a scale-invariant process: despite the orders of magnitude difference in black hole mass, and the diversity of astrophysical environments accretion occurs within, the efficiency and power budget associated with the accretion process appears ignorant to these variables. However, the physical explanation for this scaling is lacking, due to the degeneracy in broadband spectral modelling. In this thesis I show work I have done, alongside many collaborators, to address these modelling degeneracies. I focus on the outflow-dominated states of accreting black holes, from the stellar-mass components of X-ray binaries in the Milky Way, to their supermassive analogues in low-luminosity active galactic nuclei. In addition, I show how this concept of scale-invariance can be used to make predictions about the existence of the more controversial primordial black holes."--Samenvatting auteur.

Extragalactic jets provide the direct observational evidence for a connection between supermassive black holes and their surrounding cosmic environments. They deliver the energy released by an accreting black hole across large distances and impact the formation and evolution of surrounding structures, carrying information about the black hole's power, spin, accretion state and characteristic timescales. IAU Symposium 313 brings together observational astronomers working across the electromagnetic spectrum with theorists, to investigate our understanding of the physics of relativistic jets. They address questions on topics such as: unification scenarios for blazars and radio galaxies, the interactions between jets and their environments, jet composition and structure, the role of magnetic fields, mechanisms of particle acceleration, high-energy emissions, and the scaling of physical jet phenomena with black-hole mass, from extragalactic to galactic sources. This volume benefits observers and theorists, both researchers and advanced students, working on relativistic jets in distant galaxies.

Supermassive black holes are now believed to play an important role in the evolution of the Universe. Every respectable galaxy hosts in its center a black hole that appears to regulate the growth of the galaxy itself. In this book, leading experts in the field review the most recent theoretical and observational results on the following topics: - formation and growth of the first black holes in the Universe and their role in the formation and evolution of galaxies - the physics of black-hole accretion and the production of relativistic jets - binary black-hole mergers and gravitational radiation. Theoretical work is supplemented by the most recent exciting results from space and ground based observatories. This volume is useful research and reference tool for the entire astrophysical community.

Exploring Radio And Jet Properties Across The Black Hole Mass Scale written by Petrus Cornelis Nicolaas Oers and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with categories.

"Some black holes are bright in radio while others are not. In this thesis we explore why, relating the radio emission to the relativistic jet phenomenon and examining how the emission behaves across the entire observed, 8 magnitude wide black hole mass scale. First we model detailed broadband spectra of the high accretion rate stellar mass black hole GRS1915+105 as well as the low accretion rate supermassive black hole in M94 with an outflow dominated model. We see how jets appear from radio to X-ray energies and gain understanding of the underlying physical processes that produce the observed emission. In the second half of this thesis we deepen our investigation of collimated radio jets by examining large, unbiased samples of supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGN). Using the excellent spectroscopy of the (> million source) SDSS galaxy sample as a basis, we construct large samples of AGN that feature 1.4 GHz radio observations from the Very Large Array (VLA) FIRST survey. We use these samples to explore the relationship between average radio and optical line luminosities. We find that different scaling for the radio luminosity with accretion rate for LINERS compared to Seyferts and Quasars can explain the observed range of radio loudness. Lastly we explore another way of constructing an unbiased sample, starting with the same SDSS dataset, however this time not adding survey radio data, but adding serendipitously observed higher resolution, higher frequency VLA data, found by data-mining the entire (>120k observation) C-band (4.8 GHz) archive."--Samenvatting auteur.

The structure of relativistic jets in AGN on scales of light days reveals how energy propagates through jets, a process that is fundamental to galaxy evolution. A deeper understanding of jet physics will clarify the differences between radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars that manifest themselves near the supermassive black hole. We can also use relativistic jets to identify supermassive binary black holes remaining from galaxy mergers, and use orbital motion to derive the masses of the black holes. The search for binary black holes in the nuclei of galaxies will yield important information on their overall lifetime and on the processes occurring in galaxies that affect black holes and quasars. High-precision astrometric measurements, made using the technique of optical interferometry on a space-based platform, such as SIM Lite, are the key to answering these questions.

Jets are collimated ejection phenomena of magnetized plasma. These phenomena related to the accretion of a disk on a central object, are relatively common in the universe: the environment of young stars (Herbig- Haro Objects, T Tauri stars...), X-ray binaries, Gamma-ray-bursts, and active galactic nuclei... Extragalactic jets come from super-massive black holes in the center of galaxies such as quasars or radiogalaxies. They are characterized by their size, their power and velecity of the plasma.Extragalactic jets will be the subject of studies in this thesis work, although the tools and methods developed can be used for X-ray binaries and microquasars. In particular, we will ask questions about the mechanisms of launching, accelerating and collimating these flows, but also about the energy source at the origin of the flow that can reach a power in the order of 10^47erg.s-1.The links with the accretion, the proximity of the jet base to the central black hole, flow velocities observed in some jets, show that the treatment of these issues must include the effects of general relativity. We will therefore study solutions of the 3+1 decomposition of magneto-hydrodynamic equations in Kerr metric. We will apply ourselves the development of a meridional self-similar magnetized flow model with a consistent treatment of the light cylinder effect. This model can be applied to both spine jet and accretion. We explore the mechanisms of acceleration and collimation of the obtained solutions. We will calculate solutions of the incoming flow in the horizon and the outgoing flow reaching infinity including injection terms. The role of the pair creation mechanism and the processes of extracting energy from the black hole are explored.
