Munin has spent her life collecting secrets and trinkets, but when she loses her brother to the Games, she's forced to change her focus. Deciding to enter the Race Games herself to discover who orchestrated her brother's death, Munin is prepared to do what it takes to find the information she so desperately seeks. She'll call in every favor if she has to. Her only barrier is that she needs a team worthy of Odin's spy. No living person will do, so Munin decides to do something she's never dared to do before. She goes to Valhalla and drags back three Viking warriors into a second life. They were meant to aide her survival in the race, but Munin can't help the way Brin, Vidar, and Eirik make her burn. The corruption in the Race Games is growing. Munin has never been a noble bird, but she knows Hugin would have wanted her to act. Battle axe in hand, Munin and her Vikings will avenge her brother and burn those who would pit supe against supe, no matter those who stand in their way. Not all battles are fought with a blade. Some of them are fought with four tires and a checkered flag. . .

ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS Visible effects of adhesive and pressure on color in kingfisher feathers by Michaela Paulson Master of Arts in Conservation of Archaeological and Ethnographic Materials University of California, Los Angeles, 2018 Professor Ellen Pearlstein, Chair Structurally colored feathers render color through physical scattering of light rather than pigments. There is an expected, but heretofore unexplored, effect of adhesive choice and pressure on the color of these materials. Further, such feathers are generally considered to be more light-stable than their pigmented counterparts. In the current study, structurally colored blue kingfisher feathers are used to examine these effects in order to guide conservation treatments and preventive care. The Chinese tradition of diancui, literally "dotting [a surface] with [kingfisher-feather] blue", describes a technique of cloisonni style jewelry that utilizes blue, blue-green, and purple feathers instead of fused glass powder. The feathers are adhered to a substrate, usually metallic, though occasionally composed of thick layers of paper. This technique appears in Chinese culture from as early as the first century BCE, though surviving examples date most prevalently to the Qing dynasty (19th century) (Chambers et al. 1981, 32). The early featherwork items were not restricted to jewelry, but also appeared in the form of feather mosaics on clothing, bed coverings, and palanquins (Chambers et al. 1981, 32; Garrett 1994, 86). Such items are now ubiquitous in museum collections. Through a technical study of kingfisher feather jewelry from the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery at Scripps College in Claremont California, as well as accelerated light aging studies and pressure tests completed on mocked up samples of recently plucked kingfisher feathers at both the UCLA/Getty and the Getty Conservation Institute labs, I evaluate the effects of original and conservation/restoration adhesives and coatings, and effects of mechanical interactions, on the structural colors of the feathers. For the experimental part of the study, feather specimens from skins of Halcyon smyrnensis, the White-breasted Kingfisher, donated by the United States Fish and Wildlife Department, were plucked, trimmed, and adhered onto inert quartz glass plates and subjected to three methods of light aging, with color measurements occurring after aging with an integrating sphere. The accelerated light aging methods included museum conditions (free of ultraviolet radiation), window conditions (ultraviolet radiation present), and high intensity UVA conditions, with an additional control group kept in the dark. Adhesive systems tested were those documented as having been used originally or in the conservation of kingfisher featherwork, including: protein glues (gelatin and isinglass), funori, methylcellulose, and Paraloid B-72. Characterizing the adhesives used on the Scripps collection items provided supporting technical evidence. Taken together, the results of this study provide insights into kingfisher feather diancui technology, and the effect of adhesive systems and mechanical actions on the preservation of color within these structurally colored feathers. The color stability is strong, with little visible alteration in the color of unadhered feather samples from all aging chambers. However, feathers subjected to high intensity UVA radiation displayed the most significant shift in a* and b* values, becoming more colorless or grey. Adhesive choice does not result in a major difference in feather color, except Paraloid B-72, which results in darker, more saturated blue-greens. The yellow-green spots apparent on the kingfisher jewelry were not recreated on the mocked up samples and require further investigation. As the likely source for original adhesives, animal glue (or gelatin), isinglass, and funori are not recommended for conservation intervention. Methylcellulose, of the tested adhesives, may be the best choice for stabilizing comparative objects.

Susanna Passavant (c. 1711-1790) was an influential luxury goods retailer working in the City of London in the mid-eighteenth century. Born to a Huguenot family of jewelers in the early 1700s, Passavant apprenticed with the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers under the Master George Willdey, obtaining her Freedom by Servitude on January 8th, 1735. Her training, which probably focused on shopkeeping and retail, enabled Passavant to have a successful career as a manager at first George, and then Thomas Willdey's toy shops on Ludgate Street. After both Willdey toymen passed away, Passavant became executrix to Thomas Willdey's estate, a situation that embroiled her in legal complications for nearly ten years. Finally, however, in the early 1750s, Susanna Passavant opened her own retail shop on Ludgate Hill, named The Plume of Feathers . Here, she sold a wide range of goods, including toys, accessories and jewelry. By the late 1750s, Passavant's Plume of Feathers was involved in the sale of luxury goods in both domestic and international marketplaces. Her association with the London merchant house Robert Cary & Company facilitated the sale of jewelry to American customers, including George and Martha Washington at Mount Vernon. The material evidence of this study includes pieces of jewelry from Mount Vernon, in addition to toys from England and Europe, trade cards, wills, inventories, court cases, maps and newspaper advertisements. This thesis introduces Susanna Passavant as an historical case study from which future research on eighteenth-century toy shops, jewelry, and women in business can build.

In "The War of the Fatties," a campy, tongue-in-cheek retelling of an episode from the Mexican "Trojan War," naked fat women from Tlatelolco discombobulate Tenochtitlan’s invading army by squirting them with breast milk. Told with satiric allusions to the policies and tactics used by Mexico’s current ruling party, PRI, to consolidate its power, the play unfolds a history of vain rivalry and decadence, intricate political maneuvers, corruption, and unchecked ambition that determined the course of Mexican history for two centuries before the Spanish conquest. Novo’s other works in this collection—"A Few Aspects of Sex among the Nahuas," "Ahuítzotl and the Magic Water," "Cuauhtémoc: Play in One Act," "Cuauhtémoc and Eulalia: A Dialogue," "Malinche and Carlota: A Dialogue," and "In Ticitézcatl or The Enchanted Mirror: Opera in Two Acts"—represent nearly all of his Aztec-related writings. Taken together, they provide a delightful introduction to Novo’s later works and a light-hearted, historically accurate introduction to Aztec culture. The text is supplemented by a glossary of Nahuatl terms, notes on the historical characters, and an introduction that provides historical background and places Novo’s works within their cultural context.
