These essays address Jewish identity, Jewish survival, and Jewish continuity. The authors account for and analyze trends in Jewish identification and the reciprocal effects of the relationship between the Diaspora and Israel at the end of the twentieth century.Jewish identification in contemporary society is a complex phenomenon. Since the emancipation of Jews in Europe and the major historic events of the Holocaust and the establishment of the State of Israel, there have been substantial changes in the collective Jewish identity. As a result, Jewish identity and the Jewish process of identification had to confront the new realities of an open society, its economic globalization, and the impacts of cultural pluralism. The trends in Jewish identification are toward fewer and weaker points of attachment: fewer Jews who hold religious beliefs with such beliefs held less strongly; less religious ritual observance; attachment to Zionism and Israel becoming diluted; and ethnic communal bonds weakening. Jews are also more involved in the wider society in the Diaspora due to fewer barriers and less overt anti-Semitism. This opens up possibilities for cultural integration and assimilation. In Israel, too, there are signs of greater interest in the modern world culture. Approximately 6.8 million Jews live in the United States today. Of these, over 80% live in a few dozen communities, located predominantly along the North Atlantic Coast, in South Florida, and in Southern California, with isolated pockets of concentration elsewhere. Nearly all research on US Jewish life focuses on these communities, with little regard for the existence of smaller Jewish communities or the effect that Jewish community size may have on the ritual behavior, organizational affiliations, Jewish educational practices, and attitudes of American Jews, or the dynamics of their communities. This dissertation is the first large-scale study of the impact of Jewish community size on Jewish identity in the United States. Drawing on diverse theories of Jewish identity and both qualitative and quantitative data, and using existing research to develop county-level Jewish population estimates for every county in the country, I find that the size of a Jewish community is associated with a wide array of measures of Jewish identity, controlling for other factors. Perhaps more importantly, the research shows that Jewish communities of different sizes vary significantly in their preparations for life cycle events and holiday celebrations, communal participation and egalitarianism in ritual settings, approaches to Jewish education, and exposure to antisemitism. The research addresses many ways these differences can affect community members' Jewish identities, as well as the specific mechanisms by which they do so. Paraphrasing Bourdieu, I conclude that Judaism is treated as a contact sport in small communities, where a "do-it-yourself" ethos prevails, but as a spectator sport in larger communities, where greater resources allow community members to rely more heavily on a professional cadre of service providers for Jewish experiences. Although the primary contribution of this study is to the analysis of Jewish identity, implications for the study of other rare and minority communities are also addressed.

Issues of continuity, survival, and identity have generated apparently unending debates throughout the Jewish world for centuries. While similar issues arise in all Jewish communities, there are significant differences between them. This collection was designed to highlight differences as well as similarities by devoting a chapter to each of seven countries: Argentina, Australia, Canada, France, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In four communities-those in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States-debates about continuity are mainly concerned with the loss of Jewish identity through assimilation. In Argentina and South Africa, the main issue is with physical survival in the face of chaotic social conditions. In France, although the situation is less dire, the community feels threatened by the rise of xenophobic political movements and the hostility of Arab groups. Apart from external factors, all the contributors review debates over the relative importance of religion and ethnic identity, and the contrasting positions taken by religious leaders and secularists. While the study offers no clear-cut answers, it does aim to broaden the debate by exposing national differences.
