Este livro é surpreendente sob o meu ponto de vista. Primeiramente, destaco a escrita em grupo (Claudia, Ligia, Ozirlei, Circe, Mauro e Valdemir) em uma sociedade onde se prima pelo individualismo. São quatro mulheres não-indígenas e dois indígenas. Foi escrito em grupo e apoiado por um grupo. Escrita pluricultural. Olhares diferenciados. Este grupo de autores foi apoiado por um grupo mais amplo do Instituto Federal do Espírito Santo, conhecido como Grupo de Pesquisas em História da Matemática e Saberes Tradicionais (GHMat). Os autores, juntamente com o GHMat, obtiveram o financiamento da Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa e Inovação do Espírito Santo (Fapes) para o projeto de pesquisa, iniciado em 2019, e de cujos resultados, com sucesso, construíram este livro. Merece destaque também o desafio de escrever o livro em três línguas: português, guarani e tupi. Acredito que, com esta produção, os povos indígenas Guarani e Tupinikim terão melhores condições de leitura e aprendizagem do conteúdo do livro. Além disso, de que as crianças indígenas dessas etnias reconhecerão na escrita e nos desenhos, nos Jogos, brincadeiras e nas experiências em Matemática com os Guarani e Tupinikim uma produção que não lhes chega como imposição, mas como resultado de um diálogo duradouro, constante mantido entre pesquisadores e sujeitos da pesquisa, diálogo esse que teve seu conteúdo registrado por meio da escrita. Reconheço a coragem e a audácia dessas pessoas, pois a tarefa não é fácil: exige uma paciência e uma coragem constante e sem limite que podemos chamar de ‘firmeza permanente’, em uma sociedade onde os sujeitos escolhidos não são os preferidos seja no âmbito social, político, econômico e, muitas vezes, até no religioso. Outro ponto que posso destacar é o respeito que tiveram ao coletar, observar, selecionar, os desenhos e as brincadeiras das etnias que fizeram parte da pesquisa e, mediante o aproveitamento destas, desenvolverem o conteúdo da Matemática. Tarefa essa não tão simples, pois exige um olhar aguçado, olhar de águia como diria Leonardo Boff, para poder lançar voo na diferença e apontar caminhos novos na educação. Souberam também aproveitar o entorno para destacar e aprofundar experiências do cotidiano. É bom destacar aqui que o dia a dia nem sempre é percebido pelos educadores em Matemática mesmo quando estes fazem referência à prática da Matemática na vida cotidiana que geralmente é focalizada em sala de aula (a parte econômica de compra e venda de objetos). Este respeito, tão incomum nos meios educacionais, se mostra cada vez mais necessário e urgente para que um aprofundamento do conhecimento vital se torne presente nesta e nas próximas gerações. Foregrounds contributes to the development of theories of learning, in particular to theories of learning mathematics. It is relevant to students, student teachers, and researchers in the field of education as well as in mathematics education. Foregrounds contains six parts. Part I provides a summary of the notion of foreground as it has developed since the author introduced the idea in Towards a Philosophy of Critical Mathematics Education. In Part II, the reader meets some students who tell us about their neighbourhood, about drug dealing, violence, and about playing football. They tell us about their teachers, about mathematics, and about what they would like their teachers to do. They tell us about their hopes, expectations, and frustrations. Part III presents the notions of intentionality and life-world as developed by Brentano and Husserl. However, in Part IV the author provides a radical reinterpretation of these two notions. He describes "real-life intentionalities" and "real-life worlds" as profoundly structured by a range of social factors. Part V is composed as a meeting between, on the one hand, the students and their experiences as presented in Part II, and on the other hand these notions of "real-life intentionalities" and "real-life worlds". Through this meeting the author develops further the notion of foreground. The concluding part (Part VI) brings more examples as illustrations. Ole Skovsmose has a special interest in critical mathematics education. He has investigated the landscape of investigation, students' experience of meaning, project work, mathematics education and democracy, mathematics in action, and mathematics and power. He has published more than 20 books in Danish, English and Portuguese as well as a huge number of articles. In the mid-sixteenth century, Jesuit missionaries working in what is now Brazil were struck by what they called the inconstancy of the people they met, the indigenous Tupi-speaking tribes of the Atlantic coast. Though the Indians appeared eager to receive the Gospel, they also had a tendency to forget the missionaries' lessons and "revert" to their natural state of war, cannibalism, and polygamy. This peculiar mixture of acceptance and rejection, compulsion and forgetfulness was incorrectly understood by the priests as a sign of the natives' incapacity to believe in anything durably.
