Im Rahmen von Untersuchungen zum niederländischen Bild von Deutschland und den Deutschen lässt sich das Werk des Kulturhistorikers Johan Huizinga (1872-1945) als ein gewichtiger Beitrag zu Charakter und Variabilität ebendieses Bildes einfügen.Als Kulturhistoriker und -kritiker verfolgte und kommentierte er die Geschehnisse östlich der Grenze. Seine Beurteilung der Entwicklung ging dabei aus von einer tiefen Bindung an die Besonderheit der Kultur des eigenen Landes. Auf der Basis seines nationalen Selbstverständnisses entstand ein differenziertes Bild von der deutschen Kultur. Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg unterhielt er vielfältige Kontakte mit deutschen Wissenschaftlern und beeinflusste durch Werke wie "Herbst des Mittelalters" oder die Biografie von Erasmus von Rotterdam den wissenschaftlichen Diskurs in Deutschland. In den dreißiger Jahren galt er als früher Kritiker des Nationalsozialismus auf niederländischer Seite, insbesondere durch sein Werk "Im Schatten von Morgen", mit dem er die Defizite der europäischen Kulturentwicklung verdeutlichte. Nach dem deutschen Überfall auf die Niederlande wurde er zunächst im Lager St. Michielsgestel gefangen gehalten und durfte später unter strengen Auflagen in das nahe der deutschen Grenze gelegene De Steeg gehen. Hier schrieb er sein letztes Werk, "Geschändete Welt", mit dem er versuchte, die Chancen einer kulturellen Wiederherstellung Europas aufzuzeigen.Der vorliegende Band beschreibt nun nicht nur den Beitrag Huizingas zum niederländischen Bild vom deutschen Nachbarn - und insofern enthält er eine weiterführende Deutung seines Werkes -, sondern legt zugleich auch die deutsche Rezeption seines Werkes vor und nach 1945 vor.

From 11 to 15 December 1972 a group of historians from many European countries assembled in Groningen to commemorate the centenary of Johan Huizinga's birth in that city on 7 December 1872. The conference was not intended simply as a tribute to the memory of a great historian but also as an attempt to assess the sig nificance of his work for the present generation. It was supported by generous grants from the Stichting oud-studentenfonds van 1906 at Groningen, the Gro ninger Universiteitsfonds, and the Ministry of Education and Science. We are pleased to be able to publish all the papers read at the conference, together with Dr. Jansonius's study of Huizinga's style, written for another occasion. The material is presented in a roughly chronological order. The first three papers, which examine Huizinga's intellectual and literary points of departure, are followed by another three dealing with The Waning of the Middle Ages. A special paper is de voted to Huizinga's Erasmian studies. The next three authors investigate the prob lems which preoccupied Huizinga during the 1930s. Three final papers examine general aspects of his work.

Die Wurzeln der antisemitischen Agitation Johann von Leers' reichen in die Weimarer Republik zurück, wo er sich seit 1929 in Berlin als Redner und Journalist an der Seite von Goebbels profilierte. 1936 erhielt er einen Ruf an die Universität Jena, um dort »Judenforschung« zu betreiben. Kennzeichen seines uferlosen publizistischen Werks in Presse und Rundfunk war ein fanatischer Antisemitismus, der – im Rückblick auf die Verbrechen der Nationalsozialisten – die Ausgrenzung und Vernichtung der Juden als unumkehrbare Konsequenz erscheinen lässt. Nach Internierung, Illegalität und Flucht 1950 blieb Johann von Leers weiterhin als »Prophet des völkischen Antisemitismus« aktiv. In Buenos Aires zählte er zu den maßgeblichen Akteuren in den Netzwerken unbelehrbarer Nationalsozialisten. 1956 siedelte er nach Kairo über, wo er sich in den Dienst der antiisraelischen Propaganda stellte. Einige Jahre arbeitete er auch dem Bundesnachrichtendienst zu. Leers' Wirken im Kontext der antisemitischen Propaganda der Nationalsozialisten wie auch in den Netzwerken der »antisemitischen Internationale« der 1950er- und 1960er-Jahre ist von der Forschung lange Zeit nicht weiter beachtet worden. Diese Lücke schließt dieses Buch.
