English summary: Andres Strassberger does the first study of the homiletics of Johann Christoph Gottsched (1700-1766), a Leipzig professor of philosophy and literary reformer, by examining his biography and his background in intellectual, cultural and political history. He focuses on a manual of homiletics which he published anonymously in 1740 and which can claim to be the first enlightened homiletics in Germany. Andres Strassberger is interested in the networks and strategies of as well as the social groups responsible for the propagation of Gottsched's philosophical homiletics, which used the approach of the Enlightenment philosophy of Christian Wolff (1679-1753). In addition, he deals with the discussion in theological and public circles which were critical of the Enlightenment. He attempts to give a clear picture of the process of (theological) Enlightenment in the first half of the 18th century by using one specific case as an example.For this work, the author received the Hanns-Lilje-Preis 2008 der Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Gottingen and the Nachwuchsforderpreis des Fordervereins der Sachsischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Leipzig 2008. English summary: Among the formations of the Christian religion, Protestantism has always had a tendency to reflect on the way it perceives itself in a special manner. This is what has made theology, the rational explanation of faith, into a distinguishing feature of the Protestant religion and, in accordance with this, the history of theology into a central area of Protestant church history. At the intersection of literary theory, philosophy of history and phenomenology, Arts of Connection: Poetry, History, Epochality explores the representation of connections between events in literary, historical and philosophical narratives. Events in a story can be seen as ordered according to proximate causation, which leads diachronically from one event to the next; and they can also be understood in view of the structure of the narrative as a whole – for instance in terms of the unity of plot. Feldman argues that there exists an essential narrative tension between these two kinds of connection, i.e. between the overarching arrangement or plot that holds together events from "outside," as it were, in order to produce an intelligible whole; and the portrayal of one-by-one, "interstitial" connections between events within the narrative. Arts of Connection demonstrates, by means of exemplary moments in Aristotle and classical German poetics, eighteenth-century philosophy of history, and twentieth-century phenomenology, that the task of connection is a fraught one, insofar as the formal unity of narrative competes or interferes with the representation of one-by-one connections between events, and vice versa.

This volume re-examines traditional interpretations of the rise of modern aesthetics in eighteenth-century Britain and Germany. It provides a new account that connects aesthetic experience with morality, science, and political society. In doing so, it challenges long-standing teleological narratives that emphasize disinterestedness and the separation of aesthetics from moral, cognitive, and political interests. The chapters are divided into three thematic parts. The chapters in Part I demonstrate the heteronomy of eighteenth-century British aesthetics. They chart the evolution of aesthetic concepts and discuss the ethical and political significance of the aesthetic theories of several key figures: namely, the third Earl of Shaftesbury, David Hume, and Adam Smith. Part II explores the ways in which eighteenth-century German, and German-oriented, thinkers examine aesthetic experience and moral concerns, and relate to the work of their British counterparts.
