And since it is beyond dispute that no individual _character can have full and complete justice done to it unless all the circumstances are laid bare under which it was developed, and worked out its results, this principle must above all be applicable in the case of a man who forms, as it were, the focal point towards which all the music of Germany has tended during the last three centuries, and in which all its different lines converged to start afresh in a new period, and to diverge towards new results. To describe all these can indeed hardly be my present task, all the less because the time is not yet come for saying the last word as to the profound influence exercised by Bach, more particularly on the music of the nineteenth century. Excerpt from Johann Sebastian Bach, Vol. 3 of 3: His Work and Influence on the Music of Germany, 1685-1750 Esner's successor as rector of the Thomasschule was Johann August Ernesti,1 who in 1732 had been appointed Conrector. Ernesti, born in 1707, was still very young when he was placed at the head of the school; but he was qualified for the post by his learning and accomplish ments, grounded on a thorough knowledge of the authors of antiquity, and by a conspicuous talent for methodical teaching. Under his guidance the school made wonderful progress, and in this respect he was worthy to succeed Gesner, whom he even excelled in his writings by their lucidity, accuracy, and a high and pure standard Of Latinity. On the other hand, he lacked the geniality, the sympathetic kindliness, and the breadth of culture by which Gesner's highly successful work had been carried out, as well as his judgment and delicate tact. Of this Prince's deeds as a ruler there is little to be told; but that little corresponds to the promise of the face. The court was of the Reformed Church, as also was a large part of the population. His predecessor, Emanuel Leberecht, had granted to the Lutherans the free and public exercise of their religious Observances, probably under the influence of his wife, who was of that confession. Excerpt from Johann Sebastian Bach, His Work and Influence on the Music of Germany, 1685-1750, Vol. 1 of 3 Its statements would be entitled to our belief, if only from its having first seen the light at a time when Bach's memory was still fresh, and in the city where he had lived and laboured for twenty-seven years; and this is confirmed by the fact that it was compiled by Karl Philipp Emanuel Bach, the composer's second son, and by Johann Friederich Agricola, one of the most distinguished of his pupils. It is obvious that they combined for this work, because Agricola had enjoyed the benefit of Sebastian Bach's instructions at a time when his son had quitted the paternal roof, and so had personal knowledge of some circumstances which Philipp Emanuel Bach had learned only indirectly. Agricola also contributed to Jakob Adlung's Musica Mechanica Organœdi (Berlin, 1768) a number of valuable notes regarding his illustrious teacher. The simple picture of Bach's life and artistic powers which the Necrology contains, with a summary review of his compositions, has been transcribed by almost all the later biographers - so called. Thus, in the first place, Johann Adam Hiller, in his Lebensbeschreibnugen berühmter Musikgelehrten und Tonkünstler neuerer Zeit, Part I., pages 9 to 29 (Leipzig, 1784). He was followed by Ernst Ludwig Gerber, Historisch-Biographisches Lexicon der Tonkünstler, Part I., col. 86 (Leipzig, 1790), who does not seem to have known whence Hiller had derived his information. Still, even in Gerber, we here and in other places come upon original observations worthy of remark, founded on statements supplied by his father, who had been Sebastian Bach's pupil. A curious production in the way of a biography occurs in Hirsching, Historisch-literarisches Handbuch berühmter und denkwürdiger Personen, welche im achtzehnte Jahrhundert gestorben sind, Vol. I., page 77 (Leipzig, 1794).
