As long ago as 1917, Virginia Woolf expressed surprise that anyone as good as John Davidson should 'be so little famous'. Now, at last, criticism has established Davidson as a key figure in the emergence of literary modernism, as the best Scottish poet between Robert Burns and Hugh MacDiarmid, and as an important influence on the younger poets of his day, most notably T. S. Eliot. In this, the first biography of Davidson for more than thirty years, John Sloan presents a wealth of new information about Davidson's life, including his time in London, and the ties which connect him to Sherard's circle, to Wilde, Yeats, and the Rhymers' Club. John Davidson, First of the Moderns explores Davidson's career in London as a penniless author, struggling to reconcile the freedom to experience demanded by the avant-garde artist in the age of the Decadence with the obligations of family, and to combine his ambition for a many-sided reputation as a poet, novelist, and playwright with his need to survive in the commercial rough and tumble of Fleet Street, the theatre, and Paternoster Row. The conditions of authorship, the literary scandals and rows of Fleet Street, and the revelations of the characters involved here provide the literary background to the life of John Davidson. The picture that emerges is not simply of a late Victorian rebel, but of a proto-Modernist who from his recovery from a breakdown in 1896 to his strange disappearance and death in 1909, pioneered a new idiom and subject matter for twentieth-century verse.

This book is going to tell you why you should not keep your weight under control, because you are naturally inclined to have one genetic body structure, coming from your ancestors, and based on your locality, your food eating habits, and also the amount of food you get through your lifetime. But as this is a matter which nobody is going to think about, because they would rather starve themselves and want to be size 0, like any person in the limelight, who is 20 years younger than they are, come from another different genetic background, and also has terrible eating habits, this statement of mine is not going to be very reassuring. Also, I am going to give you some easily assimilated rhymes and reasons, psychologically speaking, why people are so crazy about weight loss. Is it obsession with self, steeped in narcissism, or low self-image or self-esteem, or absolutely no sense of self-respect or individual identity. And the only way a person can prove to himself and to the people around him that he is someone to be recognized and to be counted is to do something drastic or look drastic, in order to hold the three second attention span of the people around him or her? You have a point here. And as you read, you are going to understand the rationale behind why people behave the way they do, especially in matters of body image, weight loss, weight gain, dieting, and other such matters. So you are going to say, why then did I buy this book if you are not going to tell me how to keep my weight under control, easily, systematically, consistently, and permanently. Is this a sell, no pun intended. For you, I am going to give you my reason, yes, this book is going to tell you how to do these things, but in between, I am going to keep telling you why you should not lose weight on the say-so of some person who is obsessed with body image, diet, starvation, malnutrition of your body and they could not care less whether your body is subject to lifestyle diseases brought about through malnutrition and a very bad diet.

Scholars increasingly recognise that understanding the history of religion means understanding worship and devotion as well as doctrines and polemics. Early modern Christianity consisted of its lived experience. This collection and its companion volume (Worship and the Parish Church in Early Modern Britain, ed. Natalie Mears and Alec Ryrie) bring together an interdisciplinary range of scholars to discuss what that lived experience comprised, and what it meant. Private and domestic devotion - how early modern men and women practised their religion when they were not in church - is a vital and largely hidden subject. Here, historical, literary and theological scholars examine piety of conformist, non-conformist and Catholic early modern Christians, in a range of private and domestic settings, in both England and Scotland. The subjects under analysis include Bible-reading, the composition of prayers, the use of the psalms, the use of physical props for prayers, the pious interpretation of dreams, and the troubling question of what counted as religious solitude. The collection as a whole broadens and deepens our understanding of the patterns of early modern devotion, and of their meanings for early modern culture as a whole.
