Today, John Locke is recognized as one of the most important and formative philosophical influences on the modern world. His imprint is still felt in political and legal thought, in educational theory, moral theory and in the theory of knowledge. Lockes key works, "Two Treatises of Government," and the monumental "An Essay Concerning Human Understanding," provoked lively debate when they were first published in 1690 and remain standard texts in undergraduate philosophy courses throughout the English-speaking world and beyond. It is not surprising therefore that Locke scholarship is a burgeoning force in the history of philosophy and that his ideas and arguments are repeatedly alluded to in current philosophical debate. Indeed, since the publication of the first series of "Locke: Critical Assessments" in 1991, Locke research has proceeded apace, and it is now fitting that a second "Critical Assessments" series be published. Of particular importance in recent work on Locke has been research into the colonial contexts of his political writings; a more nuanced and historically grounded approach to Lockes writings on natural philosophy; and a theological turn in Locke scholarship that has centred on the content and reception of his "The Reasonableness of Christianity," Each of these new trends is represented in this second series, as are recent contributions to long-standing debates concerning Lockean interpretation and influence.

This book explores the influence of late seventeenth-century Christianity in Locke's philosophical, political, and educational thought. Only over the last decade have historians begun to investigate the central role played by religion in Locke's vision for individual autonomy and social responsibility. This book incorporates the latest scholarship and reassesses the nature of Locke's most important writings in the light of his strong commitment to traditional Christian notions of morality and human purpose. W.M. Spellman has written an ideal introduction to Locke's work.

John Locke (1632-1704) is a central figure in the history of thought, and in liberal doctrine especially. This major study brings a range of his wider views to bear upon his political theory. Every political theorist has a vision, a view about the basic features of life and society, as well as technique which mediates this into propositions about politics. Locke's vision spanned questions concerning Christian worship, ethics, political economy, medicine, the human understanding, revealed theology and education. This study shows how the character of these wider concerns informed Two Treatises of Government, especially in respect of a view of divine teleology, and situated a distinctive view of politics which treated the state and the church in parallel terms.

Locke By Thomas Fowler This biography of the philosopher John Locke (1632 1704) was published in the first series of English Men of Letters in 1880. Its author, Thomas Fowler (1832 1904) held the posts of Wykeham Professor of Logic, President of Corpus Christi College, and Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University; the editor of the series, John Morley, had been his pupil. The influence of Locke is pervasive in many fields theology, education, psychology, economics and political theory as well as philosophy and Fowler analyses the effect of his writings in five chapters (one dedicated to the Essay Concerning Human Understanding) as well as giving a chronological account of Locke's life from his obscure beginnings through his time at Oxford, his role in the household of the earl of Shaftesbury, and his two periods of travel in Europe, to a position at the heart of political and intellectual life in Restoration England." In this third edition of "John Locke", the text is divided into three parts. The first is biographical, giving an account of the development of Locke's mind. The second expounds the teaching of the "Essay", and relates this to its background; while the third deals with Locke's teaching in political theory, moral philosophy, education, and religion. -- From publisher's description.
