A groundbreaking historical-critical study of John the Baptist In the popular imagination, John the Baptist plays the supporting role of Jesus's unkempt forerunner. But meticulous historical study reveals his wide-reaching and enduring influence on the history of religion. The first study of its kind, John of History, Baptist of Faith sheds light on the historical John the Baptist and his world. James F. McGrath applies historical-critical methodology not only to the New Testament but also to the Mandaean Book of John, a holy text of the last extant gnostic sect. McGrath uses the teachings of John's pupil, Jesus, as a window into his mentor's beliefs. Along the way, he brings new clarity to questions of contention among scholars, such as John's use of immersion as a substitute for temple sacrifice. Bold in its claims yet careful in its methodology, John of History, Baptist of Faith lends fresh insight into John, Jesus, and their world. McGrath's pioneering monograph will challenge and intrigue students and scholars of the New Testament and Second Temple Judaism.

An analysis that challenges the conventional Christian hierarchy of John the Baptist and Jesus of Nazareth While the Christian tradition has subordinated John the Baptist to Jesus of Nazareth, John himself would likely have disagreed with that ranking. In this eye-opening new book, John the Baptist in History and Theology, Joel Marcus makes a powerful case that John saw himself, not Jesus, as the proclaimer and initiator of the kingdom of God and his own ministry as the center of God's saving action in history. Although the Fourth Gospel has the Baptist saying, "He must increase, but I must decrease," Marcus contends that this and other biblical and extrabiblical evidence reveal a continuing competition between the two men that early Christians sought to muffle. Like Jesus, John was an apocalyptic prophet who looked forward to the imminent end of the world and the establishment of God's rule on earth. Originally a member of the Dead Sea Sect, an apocalyptic community within Judaism, John broke with the group over his growing conviction that he himself was Elijah, the end-time prophet who would inaugurate God's kingdom on earth. Through his ministry of baptism, he ushered all who came to him--Jews and non-Jews alike--into this dawning new age. Jesus began his career as a follower of the Baptist, but, like other successor figures in religious history, he parted ways from his predecessor as he became convinced of his own centrality in God's purposes. Meanwhile John's mass following and apocalyptic message became political threats to Herod Antipas, who had John executed to abort any revolutionary movement. Based on close critical-historical readings of early texts--including the accounts of John in the Gospels and in Josephus's Antiquities--as well as parallels from later religious movements, John the Baptist in History and Theology situates the Baptist within Second Temple Judaism and compares him to other apocalyptic thinkers from ancient and modern times. It concludes with thoughtful reflections on how its revisionist interpretations might be incorporated into the Christian faith.

Originally published in 1959, A Summary of Christian History has been a classic text for introductory-level studies of Christian history for more than four decades. Even in the face of advancing history, new findings, and changing perspectives, Dr. Baker’s original classic has remained popular decades beyond the normal life expectancy of a textbook. In this third edition, Dr. John Landers, a former student of Dr. Baker, builds on the original goal of helping students grasp the broad contours of Christian history without becoming lost in a maze of historical detail.

Attention to revealed matter preys on the reader to connect the truth and facts. An awesome journey of three stories entwined in time combining ancient history with religious history that uncovers answers to theories not previously answered or too vague. Since none in his family's past had that name, and the name was considered outside the religion policies how did he come to be named John? And if just a vagabond or simple prophet as most people assume, how was he so knowledgeable about religious correctness and the Hebrew religious practices? What was the Baptist's religion with his family? If Hebrew why did the Pharisees being Jewish hate him? Why is attaching title of prophet to him an error? Why did it take so long for the rulers to execute him? With the king and queen being the only ruling party in power why did they not last? What happened to the civil rulers of the time period? A reading pleasure, its value is to the reader but it is that a couple of pastors purchased the material for use in their bible study. .. The author never thought about writing the book just was pushed into it by so many people having different concepts that challenged his own thinking. The need to know resulted in the hunt for fact and truth which all the prior various opinions in controversy only hindered. Simply put it ended up being a true learning experience for the author who feels any reader will appreciate the time and knowledge put into the book.

'A Bible History of Baptism' is a history book about the practice of baptism in Christianity. Not only does the ordinance of baptism hold a position of pre-eminent honor, as being the door of entrance to all the privileges of the visible church, but it has been distinguished with a place of paramount importance and conspicuity in the transactions of the two grandest occasions in the history of that church,—in sealing the covenant at Sinai, by which Israel became the church of God, and the grace of Pentecost, by which the doors of that church were thrown open to the world. And yet, heretofore, the discussion of the subject has been little more than a disputation, alike uninteresting, inconclusive and unprofitable, concerning the word baptizo. The present treatise is an attempt to lift the subject out of the low rut in which it has thus traversed, and to render its investigation the means of enlightening the minds and filling the hearts of God's people with those conceptions, at once exalted and profound, and those high hopes and bright anticipations of the future which the ordinance was designed and so happily fitted to induce and stimulate.
