Fast täglich mache ich nach rechts oder links meinen Spaziergang, und im Frühling und Sommer ergötzt mich dann das Leben, das hier aus den Bauerngehöften, im Orte aus den kleinen Häusern der dort wohnenden Handwerker oder Handelsleute auf den Weg oder in die Vorgärten hinausdringt; die Kinder des Gutsortes und ich, wir grüßen uns allzeit ganz vertraulich; um Weihnachten aber beehren sie mich von beiden Seiten, sei es als »ruge Klas« oder als »Kasper und Melcher aus dem Morgenland«, und sind freundschaftlicher Behandlung sicher.

Auszug: Im vierzehnten Jahrhundert in Nordschleswig war es, als dort im tiefen Buchenwalde der Ritter Claus Lembeck auf seiner Höhenfeste Dorning saß. Sie war ihm nach dem Tode seines jütischen Weibes zugefallen; er hatte sein Wappen, einen Geierkopf auf rotem Felde, über die Einfahrt des Außentores nageln lassen und zog Wall und Gräben doppelt stark um sich herum. Denn Waldemar Atterdag, der Dänenkönig, trug heimlichen Groll gegen den gewaltigen Mann, der einst aus seinem grimmigsten Feinde sein dienstbeflissener Kanzler geworden war, dann aber wiederum ihm abgesagt und sich zu den Grafen von Holstein, den Schauenburgern, und zum Herzog Waldemar von Schleswig gestellt hatte.

Als dieser aber bald danach der tödlichen Nachstellung des Atterdag nur kaum entronnen war, da zog er nach der Insel Föhr, um dort sich eine Burg zu bauen, und ließ die Feste Dorning seinem ältesten Sohne.
