John Yates, Sr. (1615-1664?) was born in Gravesend, England and immigrated to England in about 1635. He settled in Virginia and was the father of five children. One of his children was John Yates, Jr. (d.1731) who was the father of John Yates III (1720-1777) who was born in Nanesmond County, Virginia and was the father of seven children. Some of his descendants of married descendants of William Blair, Sr. (1750-1789) who was born in Ireland and immigrated to America and settled in Virginia. Descendants live in Virginia and other parts of the United States.

Levi Preston Yates was born 9 February 1862 in Chillicothe, Missouri. His parents were John Charles Yates,Jr. (1830-1878) and Rebecca Smith. He married Laura Wilmeth Metcalf (1867-1953), daughter of John Thomas Metcalf and Susan Catherine Metcalf, 26 January 1886 in St. Clair County, Missouri. They had fifteen children. Levi died in 1931 in Fishtail, Montana. Ancestors, descendants and relatives lived mainly in England, Virginia, Missouri, Montana and Idaho.
