We consider the joint source-channel coding (JSCC) problem where the real valued outputs of two correlated memoryless Gaussian sources are scalar quantized, bit assigned, and transmitted, without applying any error correcting code, over a multiple access channel (MAC) which consists of two orthogonal point-to-point time-correlated Rayleigh fading sub-channels with soft-decision demodulation. At the receiver side, a joint sequence maximum a posteriori (MAP) detector is used to exploit the correlation between the two sources as well as the redundancy left in the quantizers' indices, the channel's soft-decision outputs, and noise memory. The MAC's sub-channels are modeled via non-binary Markov noise discrete channels recently shown to effectively represent point-to-point fading channels. Two scenarios are studied in this book. In the first scenario, the sources are memoryless and generated according to a bivariate Gaussian distribution with a given correlation parameter. In the second scenario, the sources have memory, captured by a changing correlation parameter which is governed by a two state first order Markov process.

In the first scenario, the sources are memoryless and generated according to a bivariate Gaussian distribution with a given correlation parameter. In the second scenario, the sources have memory captured by a changing correlation parameter governed by a two state first order Markov process. In each scenario, for the simple case of quantizing the sources with two levels, we establish a necessary and a sufficient condition under which the joint sequence MAP decoder can be reduced to a simple instantaneous symbol-by-symbol decoder. Then, using numerical results obtained by system simulation, the theorems are illustrated and it is also verified that JSCC can harness the correlation between sources, redundancies in the source symbols, and statistics of the channel noise to achieve improved signal-to-distortion ratio (SDR) performance. For example, when the memoryless sources are highly correlated and soft-decision quantization is used, JSCC can profit from high correlation in the channel noise process and provide significant SDR gains of up to 6.3 dB over a fully interleaved channel.

(cont.) Finally, we also consider architectures consisting of both source and channel coding which deal with channel dynamics by spreading information over space, frequency, multiple antennas, or alternate transmission paths in a network to avoid coding delays. Specifically, we explore whether the inherent diversity in such parallel channels should be exploited at the application layer via multiple description source coding, at the physical layer via parallel channel coding, or through some combination of joint source-channel coding. For on-off channel models application layer diversity architectures achieve better performance while for channels with a continuous range of reception quality (e.g., additive Gaussian noise channels with Rayleigh fading), the reverse is true. Joint source-channel coding achieves the best of both by performing as well as application layer diversity for on-off channels and as well as physical layer diversity for continuous channels.

This dissertation discusses various problems in analog Joint Source Channel Coding (JSCC). Analog JSCC is an attractive communication scheme due to its encoding/decoding simplicity, and its ability to achieve near-optimal performance using very short code lengths. JSCC systems have received a renewed interest in recent years due to, among other factors, the sub-optimality of separation based schemes in many situations in multi-terminal communications. Different from traditional digital communication systems which utilize a quantizer followed by a source code and a channel code, analog JSCC systems combine source and channel coding into a single block and deal with real numbers. ☐ We present original work on the application of space filling curves, a common scheme in analog coding, to different communication scenarios. We begin by examining how to extend the use of space filling curves to non-linear channels with Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI). This type of channel arises when considering acoustic communications in the underwater environment, where the power amplifier used for communication is highly non-linear, and multi-path propagation causes ISI. We first study a simplified version of the acoustic channel assuming a frequency flat (no ISI) response, developing a scheme to adapt space filling curves to the simplified channel and studying its theoretical limits. Then, we extend our work to the complete end-to-end acoustic channel (including ISI), presenting a communication system for the end-to-end channel. ☐ We then investigate the problem of transmitting independent sources over the Gaussian Multiple Access Channel (MAC). The Gaussian MAC consists of two or more users communicating information to a central receiver over a shared noisy physical channel. We introduce an analog CDMA-like access scheme that allows users to transmit at different rates over the MAC. The developed access scheme is suitable for the transmission of analog JSCC encoded sources. The CDMA-like access scheme will be proven to be optimal for a particular case when the channel degrees of freedom are assigned amongst the users in a particular way. We will then present a hybrid analog-digital scheme which is an extension of the analog CDMA-like access scheme. The hybrid scheme uses analog and digital codes, designed for the point-to-point channel, and will be proven to be optimal for the entire region of the MAC. ☐ Finally, the dissertation introduces a new communication scheme for the two-user Gaussian Broadcast channel. The channel consists of a common transmitter wishing to communicate information to two receivers over a noisy Gaussian channel. The broadcast channel is an interesting case, since in general separation based schemes cannot achieve the theoretical limits. The new developed scheme is a variant of Scalar Quantizer Linear Coder (SQLC) systems, and is suitable for transmitting correlated Bivariate Gaussian sources. The scheme will be analyzed and shown to outperform the best known separation based schemes.

Most of the conventional communication systems use channel interleaving as well as hard decision decoding in their designs, which lead to discarding channel memory and soft-decision information. This simplification is usually done since the complexity of handling the memory or soft-decision information is rather high. In this work, we design two lossy joint source-channel coding (JSCC) schemes that do not use explicit algebraic channel coding for a recently introduced channel model, in order to take advantage of both channel memory and soft-decision information. The channel model, called the non-binary noise discrete channel with queue based noise (NBNDC-QB), obtains closed form expressions for the channel transition distribution, correlation coefficient, and many other channel properties. The channel has binary input and $2^q$-ary output and the noise is a $2^q$-ary Markovian stationary ergodic process, based on a finite queue, where $q$ is the output's soft-decision resolution. We also numerically show that the NBNDC-QB model can effectively approximate correlated Rayleigh fading channels without losing its analytical tractability. The first JSCC scheme is the so called channel optimized vector quantizer (COVQ) and the second scheme consists of a scalar quantizer, a proper index assignment, and a sequence maximum a posteriori (MAP) decoder, designed to harness the redundancy left in the quantizer's indices, the channel's soft-decision output, and noise time correlation. We also find necessary and sufficient condition when the sequence MAP decoder is reduced to an instantaneous symbol-by-symbol decoder, i.e., a simple instantaneous mapping.

The paradigm of separate source-channel coding is inspired by Shannon's separation result, which implies the asymptotic optimality of designing source and channel coding independently from each other. The result exploits the fact that channel error probabilities can be made arbitrarily small, as long as the block length of the channel code can be made arbitrarily large. However, this is not possible in practice, where the block length is either fixed or restricted to a range of finite values. As a result, the optimality of source and channel coding separation becomes unknown, leading researchers to consider joint source-channel coding (JSCC) to further improve the performance of practical systems that must operate in the finite block length regime. With this motivation, this thesis investigates the application of JSCC principles for multimedia communications over point-to-point, broadcast, and relay channels. All analyses are conducted from the perspective of end-to-end distortion (EED) for results that are applicable to channel codes with finite block lengths in pursuing insights into practical design. The thesis first revisits the fundamental open problem of the separation of source and channel coding in the finite block length regime. Derived formulations and numerical analyses for a source-channel coding system reveal many scenarios where the EED reduction is positive when pairing the channel-optimized source quantizer (COSQ) with an optimal channel code, hence establishing the invalidity of the separation theorem in the finite block length regime. With this, further improvements to JSCC systems are considered by augmenting error detection codes with the COSQ. Closed-form EED expressions for such system are derived, from which necessary optimality conditions are identified and used in proposed algorithms for system design. Results for both the point-to-point and broadcast channels demonstrate significant reductions to the EED without sacrificing bandwidth when considering a tradeoff between quantization and error detection coding rates. Lastly, the JSCC system is considered under relay channels, for which a computable measure of the EED is derived for any relay channel conditions with nonzero channel error probabilities. To emphasize the importance of analyzing JSCC systems under finite block lengths, the large sub-optimality in performance is demonstrated when solving the power allocation configuration problem according to capacity-based formulations that disregard channel errors, as opposed to those based on the EED. Although this thesis only considers one JSCC setup of many, it is concluded that consideration of JSCC systems from a non-asymptotic perspective not only is more meaningful, but also reveals more relevant insight into practical system design. This thesis accomplishes such by maintaining the EED as a measure of system performance in each of the considered point-to-point, broadcast, and relay cases.

A conventional approach to the design of wireless multimedia communications is the layered approach, in which the network layers function independent of each other. This kind of layered approach is inspired partly by Shannon's separation theorem in which the optimization of each block is equivalent to optimization of the overall source-channel coding operation. However, the separation theorem is valid only in a point-to-point communication scenario in the case of asymptotically long block lengths of data and assumes huge amounts of processing power and delay. Therefore, current practical communication systems strive to jointly design building blocks of a multimedia system for better performance. The focus of this dissertation is therefore to present various joint designs for different channel models and systems, although limited by physical constraints such as bandwidth, power and complexity. First, a robust coded scheme for progressive multimedia transmission is considered for an additive white Gaussian noise channel, a Rayleigh fading channel, and a frequency selective channel using in combination different unequal protection methods. We investigate the judicious use of the limited bandwidth through the combination and optimization of a progressive source coder, a rate compatible punctured convolutional code and a hierarchical modulation. Next, we investigate a novel packet formatting scheme for progressive sources using interleavers and various channel codes. The source coder is combined with a concatenated block coding mechanism to produce a robust transmission system for embedded bit streams. The objective is to create embedded codewords such that, for a particular information block, the necessary protection is obtained via multiple channel codings, contrary to the conventional methods which use a single code rate per information block. We show that near capacity performance can be achieved using the proposed scheme in conjunction with low density parity check codes in a binary symmetric channel scenario. We initially focus on coding strategies for multimedia where the channel state information is missing. A generalized Digital Fountain (DF) code is proposed to provide efficient universal forward error correction solution for lossy packet networks with increased unequal error protection and unequal recovery time properties. We propose a progressive source transmission system using this generalized code design. We apply the generalized DF code to a progressive source and show that it has better unequal protection and recovery time properties than other published results.
