Mapping the historical and cultural contexts of film practices in Latin America, this two-volume collection of programmatic statements, esays and interviews is devoted to the study of a theorized, dynamic and unfinished cinematic movement. Forged by Latin America's post-colonial environment of underdevelopment and dependency, the New Latin American Cinema movement has sought to inscribe itself in Latin America's struggles for cultural and economic autonomy. Alguns historiadores afirmam que “A história é a ciência do passado”, mas, como afirma Marc Bloch (2001, p. 67), a história é, na verdade, “a ciência dos homens no tempo”. Assim, podemos concordar que, sendo o tempo matéria primordial da história, resgatar, narrar e viver essa cronologia tem permitido conhecer fatos, entender contextos, conhecer escolhas, distinguir trajetórias, entre tantas outras possibilidades. O instrumento principal da cronologia é o calendário, que vai muito além do âmbito histórico, sendo um quadro temporal do funcionamento da sociedade. É o produto e a expressão da história. “Ele manifesta o esforço das sociedades para transformar o tempo cíclico da natureza, num tempo linear escandido por grupos de anos. Tanto assim, que no quadro temporal contido em um calendário é possível não somente apreciar e reconhecer trajetórias, mas conhecer o funcionamento da sociedade, em seus mais diversos níveis de desenvolvimento.
