It is authored by the exhibition curator Florina H. Capistrano-Baker, Ph.D. and features essays by contributing scholars and field experts—Sandra Castro; Michael F. Manalo, M.Arch; Maria Cristina Martinez-Juan, Ph.D.; and Iván Valdez-Bubnov, Ph.D. Intertwined provides important scholarship on Filipino heritage and transpacific studies. The publication also serves as the catalogue of the exhibition. The exhibition and its joint publication open up visual and verbal conversations on the complexities and contradictions of Filipino art and identity. By illuminating the Filipino’s transcultural heritage resulting from pre- and post-colonial maritime exchanges with diverse cultures in Asia, America, and Europe, Filipinos can gain a better understanding of our culture and take pride in the excellence we've shown throughout history in the arts, diplomacy, entrepreneurship, and the global economy.

Frontier Constitutions written by John D. Blanco and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-02-24 with History categories.

Frontier Constitutions is a pathbreaking study of the cultural transformations arrived at by Spanish colonists, native-born creoles, mestizos (Chinese and Spanish), and indigenous colonial subjects in the Philippines during the crisis of colonial hegemony in the nineteenth century, and the social anomie that resulted from this crisis in law and politics. John D. Blanco argues that modernity in the colonial Philippines should not be understood as an imperfect version of a European model but as a unique set of expressions emerging out of contradictions—expressions that sanctioned new political communities formed around the precariousness of Spanish rule. Blanco shows how artists and writers struggled to synthesize these contradictions as they attempted to secure the colonial order or, conversely, to achieve Philippine independence.

Between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, competing European empires, notably Spain, Portugal, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Belgium, and others vied for commercial and political control of transoceanic networks, particularly the transpacific routes between Asia and the Americas. The essays in Transpacific Engagements: Trade, Translation, and Visual Culture of Entangled Empires (1565–1898) address the resulting cultural and artistic exchanges with an emphasis on both the Spanish and American enterprises in the Asia-Pacific region. The essays are grouped into three parts entitled “Entangled Empires,” “Empires and Translations,” and “Empires and Trade.” A common thread in the diverse perspectives presented here is the importance of transpacific engagements to the global connections of the sixteenth century and beyond. While the focus is on the specific connection between the Asia-Pacific region and the Americas through the Philippines, we see how other parts of the world, notably South and Southeast Asia and Europe, were also participants impacted by these transpacific linkages. The goal is to convey the complexity of entangled networks of commercial, political, and religious interests that complicate the Spanish enterprise in the Pacific. Commercial ventures into Canton and Manila by the early American republic, for example, overlapped with and later replaced the Spanish galleons. East, South, and Southeast Asian polities and dynasties remained powerful players in what were often multilateral, rather than bilateral, exchanges. Contributors to this volume are based in Asia, the Americas, and Europe.

Images, objects, and performances represent essential forms of mediality, which frequently escape our traditional understanding of historical communication. This volume discusses from an interdisciplinary perspective the varying structures and media of communication and representation in transcultural spaces of Latin America and the Philippines. Based on different topics and methodological approaches of the contributors, the articles reflect on the perspectives and problems of the integration of visuality, materiality, and performance as categories of cultural analysis in historical settings between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. In that regard, both the methodological and regional comparative approaches of this volume claim to contribute-beyond the regional focus of the studies-to the general debate about cultural theories and to make general statements about the mechanisms of cross-cultural communication in cultural contact zones of the modern period.

Alfredo Roces written by David Jonathan Bayot and has been published by Liverpool University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-07-01 with Art categories.

Alfredo Roces: Digital Paintings features the digital art creation of a polymathic Filipino artist. Though formally trained in the traditional school of fine arts—where in the mid-fifties, the artist took up drawing classes with German Expressionist and Dadaist, George Grosz at the Art Students League of New York—Roces welcomed with gusto the offer of new technologies for his artmaking. The artist’s encounter with “Photoshop” in 2004 would eventually set the stage for his ongoing adventures with digital artmaking—when in 2011, nearing eighty years of age, he discovered the Big Apple and found his Eden with “Brushes” (and later on, “Procreate”) in iPad. The book presents a selection of more than a hundred of Roces’s iPad drawings in various genres—portrait, still life, human figure, and abstract—and shows to full effect the artist’s zest for life. The book is prologued with an interview with the editor, David Jonathan Bayot, in which Roces tells of a life so far and speaks of his dreams for the tomorrows ahead. A prefatory interview is complemented by the artist’s own account of his “adventures with digital art.” In the words of Tina Colayco, President of the Metropolitan Museum of Manila: "There is much to be admired with Alfredo Roces who at 90 remains an authentic and authoritative persona in Philippine art and culture. The book captures the essence of Roces as a Filipino artist, the zeitgeist of so many decades, and a continuing passion to create art. It brings to the fore the journey of the gentleman-artist described in the epigraph to the book as ‘sitting in the Row of a morning’.”

Tale of Two Pateros chronicles the collective endeavors and triumphs in achieving sisterhood unity of the peoples of Pateros City in Washington State and Pateros in the Philippines, sparked by the circumstantial encounter and curious exploration of a group of Filipino-American travelers motoring back from a Canada visit. Originally envisioned as the last chapter of Pateros in My Spirit collegial memoir book, the author spun it into a separate pictorial publication after townmates (who love being called ka-Paterosinos) enormously contributed a rich photographic collection of interrelated events and even entailing the funding to produce this touching love offering to their cherished homeplace back in the Philippines and the other Pateros enjoyed fondly as a paradise by the Cascade Mountains in the Okanogan Valley. The two Pateros, though oceans apart and linked only in 1900 in name by a homecoming Washington military officer veteran of the Spanish-American War, rediscovered each other’s history, heritage, and culture by majesty of diplomacy and blossomed friendship, formalized during the signing of sisterhood agreement amid the momentous celebration of the one hundredth year anniversary of the founding of Pateros City in 2013. Tale of Two Pateros is a clarion saga of that attainment of accord and unification preserved in engaging narratives and a feast of images offered to the future generations of the two Pateros and enticed readers.
