Partindo da leitura de obras específicas de Almeida Garrett, Eça de Queirós e de Machado de Assis, este livro propõe-se revisitar a questão das relações entre filosofia e literatura num tempo histórico marcado pelos processos de legitimação institucional da literatura como discurso crítico e como disciplina académica nos espaços da língua portuguesa. Contrariando uma tendência hegemónica da crítica especializada, a de reduzir a ficção literária à condição de espelho de correntes filosóficas e/ou pseudo-filosóficas determinadas (hegelianismo, positivismo, darwinismo social), que constituiriam um pensamento do autor, Filósofos de trazer por casa demonstra que a apropriação astuciosa de registos filosóficos verificável na escrita destes escritores do oitocentos antes reconhece na mimesis literária um dispositivo capaz de questionar a validade universal dessas mesmas correntes de pensamento. O pressuposto que neste livro informa tal demonstração é o de que a representação da filosofia nas obras de Garrett, Eça e Machado é mobilizada ao serviço da legitimação daquele recurso que na literatura permite a alguém enunciar um discurso em nome de outrem, isto é, assumir a responsabilidade pelo que é escrito através da ficção da autoria. É através deste processo de legitimação que estes autores negoceiam a sua participação na modernidade.
