This book demonstrates that Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, which is often referred to by literary critics as a modernist novel from the content and technical aspects, is a transitional novel which reflects both the preceding Victorian and succeeding Modernist periods. Since Heart of Darkness was written in 1899 and published in 1902, the last phase of the Victorian period and simultaneously the beginning of the modernist period, it reflects Victorian literary traits, beliefs, values and ideologies of colonialism, the inferior position of women and the use of religion as a mask. Heart of Darkness as a transitional novel projects the good and evil in human nature that transcends periods and equally portrays Conrad's vision for man's capacity to live the virtues of restraint, truth, sincerity and respect for one another irrespective of race, religion, colour or sex. Hypocrisy, greed, cruelty, manipulation and barbarism are pernicious vices which he vehemently condemns

Criticism about the neo-Victorian novel — a genre of historical fiction that re-imagines aspects of the Victorian world from present-day perspectives — has expanded rapidly in the last fifteen years but given little attention to the engagement between science and religion. Of great interest to Victorians, this subject often appears in neo-Victorian novels including those by such well-known authors as John Fowles, A. S. Byatt, Graham Swift, and Mathew Kneale. This book discusses novels in which nineteenth-century science, including geology, paleontology, and evolutionary theory, interacts with religion through accommodations, conflicts, and crises of faith. In general, these texts abandon conventional religion but retain the ethical connectedness and celebration of life associated with spirituality at its best. Registering the growth of nineteenth-century secularism and drawing on aspects of the romantic tradition and ecological thinking, they honor the natural world without imagining that it exists for humans or functions in reference to human values. In particular, they enact a form of wonderment: the capacity of the mind to make sense of, creatively adapt, and enjoy the world out of which it has evolved — in short, to endow it with meaning. Protagonists who come to experience reality in this expansive way release themselves from self-anxiety and alienation. In this book, Glendening shows how, by intermixing past and present, fact and fiction, neo-Victorian narratives, with a few instructive exceptions, manifest this pattern.

In considering the responses of Carlyle, Emerson, Melville, and Conrad to Montaigne and to one another, this work focuses on the fundamental contradiction between wisdom and art and demonstrates that this contradiction impels the writing of the Essais and generates the Victorian sage's antic speculations.

A. T. Moore's thorough commentary on "Love's Sacrifice" is designed to be of use to all kinds of readers, from students of Early Modern drama to specialists in the field. The notes provide full explanations of obscure words and phrases, and offer analyzes of many aspects of staging and interpretation. The text for this edition is based on a fresh study of the quarto of 1633, the only authoritative early text. In his introduction to the play, Moore reappraises the evidence for the play's date of composition. He also looks at the circumstances of the play's genesis, presenting detailed discussions of both the theater where "Love's Sacrifice" was first performed and the acting company for which it was written. Arguing that Ford's adaptation of his source materials is the key to interpreting this remarkably allusive play, Moore provides a wealth of new information about Ford's sources. The introduction also includes a survey of critical responses, an overview of the play, stage history, and a bibliography of relevant secondary material. This new volume in the "Revels Plays" series is the most detailed and comprehensive edition of "Love's Sacrifice" ever published - and the first modern-spelling edition of Ford's tragedy in more than a century. The play's textual history is discussed in an appendix. A second appendix examines possible links between "Love's Sacrifice" and the real-life story of the murdered Italian prince and musician Carlo Gesualdo.
