Joseph Whiteley (1754-1818), the son of Joseph Whiteley, Sr., and Mary Plumbley, was born in England. His widowed father brought him to America ca. 1758, and he eventually settled in Tennessee. He married Sarah Stapleton (ca. 1760-1836) ca. 1775. They had fourteen children. Descendants live throughout the United States.

One of his descendants was John Williams (1866-1927) who married Mittie Eaton and they eventually moved form Tennessee to Oklahoma. They were the parents of 12 children. Descendants married into the McBroom and Whiteley families. Descendants live in Oklahoma, Texas and other parts of the United States.

Family of Joseph Whiteley Sr., who came to America a few years after his only brother John Whiteley had come in 1750. They emigrated from White Haven, England and settled near Jamestown, Va. Joseph Sr. and his wife died in 1755 leaving two small boys, who later were raised by their uncle and batchelor, John Whiteley. Older son, Joseph Jr. married Sarah Stoppleton. They had fourteen children. Family lived in Washington Co., Va. and settled near Nashville, Tennessee. Book deals mainly with the author's line, the Ohio branch, founded by John Whiteley (1780-1845) and his wife, Christian Hall. John was the son of Joseph Whiteley Jr. and he was born in North Carolina. He lived with his family in Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio.
